Antique Scottish Highlands Signed Oil Painting Loch Tay Perthshire
By Francis E. Jamieson
Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
"Loch Tay"
by F. E. Jamieson (British 1895-1950)
signed, lower corner with pseudonym "W. Richards"
titled verso to canvas
oil painting on canvas, unframed
canvas: 16 x 24 inches
Fine quality antique oil painting by the much admired and celebrated British artist F. E. Jamieson (1895-1950). The painting is signed by Jamieson to the lower right corner with his favoured pseudonym, "W. Richards".
The painting captures this brooding Highland landscape and the deep and dark waters of Loch Tay, one of the most stunning lochs in Scotland.
Loch Tay is a magnificent dark stretch of water, 15 miles (24 km) long and around 508 ft deep.
It’s the largest loch in Perthshire and one of the deepest in Scotland. To the north, the loch is flanked by the impressive bulk of the Ben Lawers mountain range, much of which is designated as a National Nature Reserve. The main A827 road runs high above the loch, west from Kenmore. The contours are gentler on the southern shore and Sustrans Cycle Route Number 7 runs along a quiet unclassified road.
It's hard to believe that ancient settlers once lived on Loch Tay, inhabiting artificially created islands known as crannogs. There are eighteen crannogs on Loch Tay, most are now submerged but a large crannog near the northern shore at Kenmore can be clearly seen. This was the ancient burial place of Queen Sybilla, wife of Alexander King...

Announcement in Village Square mid 19th century
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Fine 19th century oil painting of a bustling Austrian/Germanic village with horse, rider and various figures outside an Inn, attributed to Arthur Georg Ramberg (1819-1879), well known for figurative genre paintings. The rider is carrying a bugle, apparently announcing news to the people; men are sitting by the table drinking, one with a raised stein. Women walking by stop to listen, a man carrying a sack has stopped to watch the rider, people are in the Inn doorway, and one is looking out the window. Children pause their playing. The scene is under a large tree beside the Inn; a whole community waiting for news.
There is a great deal of detail in the scene, tree and Inn house...

19th Century continental townscape oil painting of a busy harbour
By Ludwig Hermann
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Ludwig Hermann

A Bustling Harbour Town
Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1863
Image size: 26 inches x 36.5 inches
Size including frame: 35.25 inches x 45.75 inches
A wonderful continental townscape scene of a bustling harbour by Ludwig Hermann. The Medieval architecture is reminiscent of North Germany and the Baltic sea area with its busy trading ports. Figures can be seen chatting to traders as ships sail around the harbour.
Ludwig Hermann or Herman was born Elias Ludwig Julius Herrmann at Greifswald, Germany in 1812 to Wilhelm and Sophie Herrmann. Although little is recorded about his early life and education, he is known to have left his home in 1831 at the age of 19, to pursue an artistic career in Berlin. There he entered the Prussian Academy of Arts where he studied under Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850).
Hermann started exhibiting at the Berlin Academy exhibitions in 1836. A year later in 1837, he travelled to Paris to study under Eugène Isabey (1803-1886) and Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870). By 1841 he had returned to Berlin where he married Caroline Wilhelmine ‘Auguste’ Dupont on 16 October, 1841. From his base in Berlin he travelled around Europe painting views of France...

oil painting on canvas, framed
canvas: 12 x 20 inches
frame: 15 x 23.5 inches
Fine quality antique oil painting by the much admired and celebrated British artist F. E. Jamieson (1895-1950). The painting is signed by Jamieson to the lower corner with one of his pseudonyms.
The painting captures this beautifully romantic view of the Scottish Highlands, the whole landscape warmed by the summer sunshine as the harvest fields glow golden light on the river banks to the right.
F. E. Jamieson (1895-1950)
We are extremely fortunate to have been handling the works of the enigmatic British artist, F. E. Jamieson since the year we began art dealing, 1989.
Over this time, coupled with our love of the Scottish landscape, we have bought and sold many hundreds of his paintings, in all their various guises and subjects and are considered by many to be a leading authority on the artist and his work. We are also in the early stages of publishing the Catalogue Raisonne for this artist, of which this painting will be featured.
Mr. Jamieson was largely a painter of Scottish landscapes and loch scenes. Born in 1895, Jamieson lived on the south coast of England and was contracted to a large department store to supply them with his paintings. He was an ambitious man and keen to sell more works than through just one shop. In order to do this, he started to sign his works with pseudonyms other than his own name, in order that he could sell his work to a wider audience. It worked and it is considered that Jamieson at least 15 different pseudonym names on his paintings.
In addition to selling through furniture shops, Jamieson would travel door to door offering his paintings to housewives and private buyers. In our years of researching the artist, we heard one story related to us by an old customer who remembers that Jamieson started selling door...

19th Century seascape oil painting of Penzance harbour, Cornwall
By William Edward Webb
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
William Edward Webb
British, (1862-1903)
Penzance Harbour
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 29 inches x 45.5 inches
Size including frame: 38 inches x 54.5 inches
A pleasing coastal painting of Penzance Harbour at low tide by William Edward Webb. In the foreground, a fisherman sells his catch to a woman and her daughter, whilst figures in horses and carts wait for others to unload their boats.
William Edward Webb was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in 1862 to William Benjamin Webb and Ellen Butler. His father was a printer and an artist and it is highly likely he received tuition from him. Following the death of his mother, his father remarried and moved the family to Manchester sometime after 1871.
By the 1880’s, Webb had started working as an artist and later set up a studio at 30 Exchange Buildings in Manchester. He began exhibiting at the Manchester City Art Gallery from 1890, where he showed more than 60 paintings during his lifetime. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy and Walker Art Gallery Liverpool from 1892. He married Clara Foster in 1899 and the couple lived at 1 Sylvan Grove, Chorlton Upon Medlock in South Manchester with their daughter Florrie. He became friends with the artist Walter Emsley (1860-1938) who also lived in Manchester.
Although he spent the rest of his life in Manchester, Webb travelled throughout the UK painting coastal and marine scenes around the main ports and harbours. He spent a great deal of time in the Isle of Mann painting numerous scenes along the coast including views of Peel and Douglas Harbour, subjects he frequently returned to. Webb painted in a highly distinctive style; loose and informal but which manages to retain the sense of perspective. He struggled with ill health and depression throughout his life which sadly led to his suicide 9 November, 1903. In 1974, a retrospective exhibition was held at The Old Customs House and Old Solent House in Lymington, which brought a new found interest in his work.
His paintings are now highly sought after and are represented in many collections and Museums including the Astley Hall...
