Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Primarily matte and satin finish black paint, mixed with plaster and oil stick on canvas. An abstract and surreal painting with accents of pinks, reds, purples, and gold. A very faint profile of a leopard walking into the darkness is situated on the lower left side of the canvas. In the upper right "MDCCCXCIV" (1894) is hand painted in gold serif font. Locals know them as "bugs". A small bug is a one pound lobster. Artist Jeff Conroy was able to print this "bug" - a behemoth weighing in at almost 8 pounds aptly named "Big Bug". The artist uses a style of gyotaku printing which uses various inks directly on a fish (or in this case, a lobster) and then "prints" it to paper.
