A rare two-sided uncut printer's proof for the Japanese release of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark.' When cut, this sheet would have provided eight Japanese B5 or 'Chirashi' mini posters for use as flyers in cinema lobbies to promote current and future releases. Popular with Japanese collectors, Chirashi often take the form of a miniature replica of the movie's poster, with information printed on the reverse. Conceived by producer George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg in their first collaboration, the spectacular 1981 action-adventure blockbuster 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' starred Harrison Ford as globe-trotting action-hero archeologist Indiana Jones in a quest for the biblical Ark of the Covenant. Created by Lucas as a tribute to the cliff-hanger western and adventure serials of the 30s and 40s, Raiders was a massive box office success, becoming the highest grossing film of 1981 and remaining one of the highest grossing films or all time when adjusted for inflation. During the 1950s and 1960s, American artist David Klein created dozens of alluring posters for Howard Hughes' glamorous Trans World Airlines, capturing the excitement and adventure of travel. His iconic designs, with their bright and colorful illustrations of famous landmarks, won many awards and came to define the spirit of the jet age.
