Supreme Prints and Multiples

American

Supreme’s ascent from neighborhood cult favorite to auction star is a master class in brand marketing, based on creating hard-to-build desire. Launched in New York City in 1994, the iconic streetwear brand with a subversive attitude has attracted a following that ranges from downtown skaters to fashion's elite.

After a short-lived stint as a salesman for downtown Manhattan store Parachute and running a Stüssy branch as well as his own retail outlet, Union, British ex-pat James Jebbia opened Supreme, “the cool, cool shop … no big brands or anything.” The founder and director sold skateboards and sneakers, beanies, tees and hoodies while movies like Mean Streets and loud hip-hop played in the background, attracting a young downtown crowd of skateboarders, artists and entrepreneurs who found the store’s counterculture ethos appealing.

With success came brand collaborations big and small — all tightly controlled by Jebbia, who is renowned for unfailing business instincts — ensuring waiting lists and lines at new product launches. A 2012 partnership with Comme des Garçons brought Supreme avant-garde fashion followers with deeper pockets.

“I don’t think enough people take risks, and when you do, people respond — in music, in art, in fashion,” Jebbia told Vogue. He seemed to be taking a risk working with big brands. But although some fans accused him of selling out with Supreme’s Fall/Winter 2017 collaboration with Louis Vuitton, most did not, including the winning bidder for the Malle trunk at Christie’s.

A curated “Artist Series” of Supreme skate decks was inaugurated in 2001 when the then-not-so-famous street artist KAWS, aka Brian Donnelly, designed his Chum boards, a pair of which, signed, went for $32,000, four times their estimate, at the “Handbags X Hype” sale. The series now includes creations by Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, Damien Hirst, the Chapman Brothers and George Condo.

He soon switched to Vision, where he graduated to pro status and won the 1985 Oceanside street contest. He is often described as the greatest skateboarder of all time, and even more often as the most influential, and is undoubtedly a true pioneer of modern street skateboarding. Gonz’s affiliation with Supreme goes way back to the stores beginning on Lafayette Street, NYC. Whenever overseas on skate trips, Mark would often send postcards to the late Harold Hunter and the rest of the crew at “Supream” (his misspelling), featuring his own doodles and musings, some of which would later make it on to items of clothing from the brand. No, Supreme is not owned by Louis Vuitton. VF Corporation, which is based in Denver, Colorado, owns Supreme. A company called LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, which is headquartered in Paris, owns Louis Vuitton. However, Louis Vuitton x Supreme bags, clothing and accessories are the product of one of the most influential Louis Vuitton collaborations.

For many years, luxury and street were totally separate domains. But a bridge joining them developed steadily during the first decades of the 21st century. Vuitton x Stephen Sprouse edged the legacy brand toward the street, while Supreme's 2012 collaboration with Comme de Garçons married street cred to high style.

The Louis Vuitton x Supreme collab hit the runway in 2017. "Come all ye hypebeasts," announced Office magazine. "Today's Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter menswear show featured official Supreme x LV items, and the internet is freaking out."

Shop Louis Vuitton x Supreme apparel and accessories on 1stDibs.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2024
Louis Vuitton x Supreme is the name of a collaboration between a revered French luxury house (Louis Vuitton) and an iconic American streetwear brand (Supreme). In 2017, the two brands teamed up to unveil a range of footwear, clothing and accessories.

For many years, these two worlds, luxury and street, were totally separate domains. But a bridge joining them developed steadily during the first decades of the 21st century. Vuitton x Stephen Sprouse edged the legacy brand toward the street, while Supreme’s 2012 collaboration with Comme de Garçons married street cred to high style.

For physical store locations, consult either brands’ websites. Supreme x Louis Vuitton collaboration pieces are available for purchase through multiple platforms, including 1stDibs. • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 15, 2024
To tell if a Louis Vuitton x Supreme hoodie is real, look at the drawstring along the hemline. The drawstring on a real Louis Vuitton x Supreme hooded sweatshirt will be flat and not extend past the logo graphic. Replicas often feature rope-like rounded drawstrings or extra-long drawstrings. The neck tag can also help you determine authenticity. Compare the size, font style and other characteristics of the tag on your hoodie to images of labels from authentic pieces displayed on trusted online resources. Double-check the stitching that secures the tag to the hoodie as well. If the stitching is loose, uneven or misaligned, your hoodie may be counterfeit. If you have any remaining concerns about authenticity, seek the opinion of a certified appraiser or expert authenticator. Shop a selection of Louis Vuitton x Supreme apparel and accessories on 1stDibs.
