Constant Ludovic Artz Dutch, (1870-1951) Mother Duck & Ducklings Oil on panel, signed Image size: 9.5 inches x 15.25 inches Size including frame: 16.5 inches x 22.25 inches A delightful painting of a mother duck with her ducklings by constant Ludovic Artz. A white duck can be seen sitting on a river bank surrounded by her five ducklings. Two of the ducklings are shown taking rest by her side as the others forage close by. Constant David Ludovic Artz was born in Paris on 3 June, 1870, the son of David Adolph Constant Artz (1837-1890) and Josephine Jouanin. His father was a Dutch artist who had moved his family to Paris to set up a studio. The family returned to Holland in 1874 and settled in the Hague. Artz was taught art by his father and at the age of 12 enrolled at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. He also received tuition from Hendrik Mesdag (1831-1915) and Willem Maris (1844-1910) who had an influence on his subject matter. He married Johanna Sophia Cecilia Ginjoolen at the Hague on 5 July, 1893. One of the witnesses was the artist Tony Offermans (1854-1911) whom he was apprenticed to at his studio. The couple went on to have two children together and to supplement his income, Artz also worked as an art teacher. One of his pupils was Leendert Scheltema (1876-1966). After divorcing from his first wife in 1915, he married Lucie Sophie van der Hoeven in 1917. At some point he moved to Soestdijk, living there until 1926 when he relocated to Katwijk at Sea in. He returned to Soestdijk in 1931 where he died on 23 February, 1951. Like his father, Artz was fascinated by nature and after painting a series of landscapes and seascapes began producing scenes featuring ducks and waterfowl usually on or by lakes and rivers. He was an expert at painting the play of light upon water and also preferred to work with smaller canvasses. His work can be found in private and public collections including the Rijksmuseum. "Galloping Horse and Rider" Alessio Issupoff (1889 Russia-1957 Rome) Oil on wood panel Signed lower right 5 1/2 x8 1/2 (13 1/2 x 16 1/2 frame) inches This is such a stunning little jewel, it's almost hard to believe. Alessio Issupoff dedicated his whole life to art and was shaped by his years at the Moscow School of Painting, and later absorbed a great deal from Impressionism and the work of the Italian Renaissance masters. But he kept his distinctive style and remained true to the idea that excited the generation of painters of the turn of the 20th century — “the embodiment of the great beauty of everything alive.” Alexei Vladimirovich Isupov, known by his Italianized name Alessio Issupoff, was born in Vyatka (now Kirov) on March 10, 1889. The son of an icon carver and gilder, he learned to paint from the artisan painters who worked with his father. Wanting to give expression to his own artistic creativity, the young Alexei did not take up his father's trade but left Vyatka for Moscow where he attended the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. His mentor was the painter Apollinary Mikhailovich Vasnetsov, brother of Viktor, who introduced him to the Moscow artistic milieu and helped him find work. By studying and visiting museums, Issupoff formed his own aesthetic “taste” by modifying it on contemporary Russian and French Renaissance art...

This exquisite portrait, with its new attribution to Theodore Russel, is believed to depict Lady Penelope O'Brien, daughter of Barnabas O'Brien, the sixth Earl of Thomond, and wife of the Earl of Peterborough, whom she married in 1644. The painting thus belongs to a historically significant period, capturing the refined elegance of the time. The portrait has a prestigious provenance from Elleholms Hofgård, a historic estate in Mörrums socken, Blekinge, Sweden. Elleholms Hofgård, whose two-story, timber-framed main building was constructed in 1730 and expanded in 1804, has changed ownership several times since the 17th century. The ancestors of the present owners acquired the estate in 1915, and from the 20th century until 2023, this painting was prominently displayed in the estate’s main building, making it an integral part of the estate’s history. Theodore Russel, an English portrait artist born in 1614, studied under the renowned Sir Anthony van Dyck, whose influence can be seen in Russel’s meticulous style. Russel often painted on cabinet-sized panels, such as this one, which measures approximately 39 x 31 cm. This preference for panels is a notable characteristic that sets him apart from contemporary artists like Sir Peter Lely, who exclusively used canvas. The size of the panel is a key reason for the reattribution to Russel from Peter lely, as Lely never used panels for his works. This distinctive format, along with Russel’s characteristic style, strongly supports the new attribution. Russel, the son of Nicasius Rousseel, a goldsmith and jeweler to James I and Charles I, refined his skills under the mentorship of his uncle, the famous portrait painter Cornelis Janssen. He also worked as an assistant and copyist for van Dyck, further honing his artistic style.
