Toon Laurense (1958, Venray, the Netherlands) Laurense is a painter, who honours the secret of paint. Every painting that he makes, gives a new insight into the possibilities of imagining with paint. It is a direct exchange with the material: human being and paint. It is all about how he lets the paint move and what it does to him.
The making of the painting is a composition, a choreography, that is not written black on white. His paintings emerge and are not designed. He always feels resistance when he does something he thinks to know already. He has to conquer the resistance and to punish it, when it becomes easy. For Laurense working on his art is a musical matter.
A painting of Toon Laurense features two components: an open part, a window to the distance and a closed part that stops the view. The open part is a landscape. A space with light and diffuse colours, with a sort of horizon or an end. The closed part is lined, monochrome coloured, closing the windows as scenes.
Toon Laurense is a modern romantic. His landscapes carry the feelings,like the romantic landscapes in the first half of the 19th century did.
Together with his wife, artist Maartje Frencken, he lives and works in St. Michelsgestel, the Netherlands.to
