Victorian Impressionist Large Oil Painting of a young girl with her three goats in a farmyard. This is an unusual subject for Lee Hankey who is more widely known for his landscapes in soft colours. It is presumed an early work. The more recent provenance is listed below. Lot 81, Phillips North-west sale, 23/3/94 Sold by The Fine Art Society, June 1985 to a private buyer Lot 7, Christies, 17/10/84, sold to The Fine Art Society for £550 (previously the property of Miss E Carnegy-Arbuthnott, OBE) Lot 88, Christies, 11/10/73, sold to Brooke for 300 guineas (£315). There is a Fine Art Society label on the back of the picture. We contacted the Fine Art Society, and subsequently Christies, about the picture, and they provided the above information about the history of the painting. WILLIAM LEE HANKEY British 1869-1952 Oil Painting on canvas mounted on stretchers and framed in a traditional Impressionist style handmade frame. This painting has been in a private collection for around 30 years and was previously owned by the Fine Art Society. It is a beautiful study of a young peasant girl with her goats in a farm courtyard. The work is both sensitive and charming, he employs a lovely earthy palette and has a sketchy foreground and more detailed background. William Lee Hankey was born in Chester, Cheshire. On leaving School he became a designer, studying art in the evenings at Chester School of Art. In 1894 he first exhibited in London where his paintings and individual style attracted immediate attention.
