William McCarthy Art

American, b. 1951

William McCarthy is an American artist born in 1951. In every one of McCarthy's works, we can find these luminous and mysterious images of trees against a sky, field or river, which evoke a subtle variation of light and atmosphere. For McCarthy, the arrangement of the trees, whether standing in solitude or pairs or large groupings seem at once surprising, or accidental. Yet all of his paintings are composed from memory, imagination and thumbnail sketches from his basement studio in his home in Connecticut. He works on wood board, paper and canvas using several layers of gesso before priming the surface with cadmium red base. Then a quick sketch using charcoal is used to lay out the design then the oil paint is applied. He works in layers using thinned down oil paint, building the layers with glazing techniques. Upon completion, a final coat of varnish is applied. For McCarthy, light has come to play an important role, and as he describes when he looks back to his body of work, "I feel it speaks about spiritual places, places that contain a quiet inner light, radiating an ethereal whisper, the places we see everyday."

Artworks are in private collections all over the world: USA, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Netherlands, France, Spain, South Africa, Egypt, Australia, Japan, Singapore. The main focus of my painting is underwater world. I draw my inspiration during scuba diving. Underwater I have learnt not only about the many life-forms, but the shapes and colors of everything in that realm continue to blow my mind. I feel like I am in another dimension. I am an artist one of the new pioneers in the growing field of underwater painting and Andre Laban follower. I developed my own special course of underwater painting and approved it in PADI. By teaching people scuba diving and underwater painting I open a new world of inspiration, artistry and creativity. I help people to experience artistic way to live. Scuba Divers witness the changes happening in the ocean – and can be among the first to raise the awareness of others to these growing problems. Nowadays most scuba divers have underwater cameras, to record the treasures and tragedies happening underwater – in this case evidence of the destruction of marine life. Art too, is a very effective tool and medium to communicate these messages. My art is my language. I would like to make people more human, more spiritual, to find their soul, love and kindness through the reunion with nature. So I am very happy to have opportunity to attract people by my art to the nature, in diver to find an art person and show a new reality – underwater world to art person. I believe that with my paintings more people will fall in love with the world of the sea, and become involved in the protection of our oceans for future generations to enjoy and wonder at. That is what I wish to come of these works and this experience in my life. That is what I wish to come of these works and this experience in my life. Located in Santa Monica, CA
Depicts the terminal view from LAX. Sparsely populated though replete with objects and evidence of the built environment, Gay Summer Rick creates iconic urban and coastal land and cityscape paintings that evoke emotion and a sense of place. She creates scenes that are at once dreamlike and familiar. You may have been there; you are there. Revealing an unexpected beauty in commonplace elements within the urban landscape, Gay Summer’s style is a melding of impressionism and color-field painting describing the quiet vibration of life where cities meet the sea. Applying oil paint to canvas using only palette knives, Gay Summer Rick creates images through a series of interacting, melded layers. The paint is treated architectonically; it is engineered, built into layers, carved, scraped, accumulated, and almost sculpted, but never removed, never discarded. In part to avoid material waste and the use of toxic solvents for reasons of environmentalism, she finds this almost mnemonic accrual of paint a reflection of her experiences in the places she depicts. Growing up in New York surrounded by artists, Gay Summer Rick began her arts education early in life. She went on to formally study art and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in New York at the School of Art and Design, Alfred University, where she drew, painted and sculpted images on clay forms and vessels. After receiving a Masters degree in Business Administration, she continued her art training in Los Angeles in painting, which became the primary focus of her art practice. A resident of Southern California for over 25 years, the artist maintains her studio in Malibu. Gay Summer Rick regularly exhibits in California and Hawaii, and has shown in New York, Europe, and Japan. Her paintings have been featured in solo gallery exhibitions and museum group exhibitions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Rental & Sales Gallery; and in international and national group exhibitions where she has received numerous awards and honors. She is a member of Oil Painters of America, California Art Club, Malibu Art...
