'Cobalt Bird' is an original signed sculpture by the Zimbabwean artist Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira. Trained in the Shona carving tradition, Mazhindu often sculpts abstracted birds, as in this example. This sculpture is playfully interactive: Even though the bird has one body, there is a head carved on each side, asking the viewer to walk around to see it peeking back at them. At the same time as he is considering the viewer's interaction with the artwork, the sculptor is likewise displaying his skills as a sculptor. Cobalt stone is notoriously brittle, as well as rare, making it difficult to work with and to acquire. The efforts are however rewarding, as the polished stone reveals dramatic patterns of greens and blacks.

'Family' is an original stone sculpture signed by Zimbabwean artist Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira. The composition is an example of the family groupings, with each figure arranged as though they were a flower in a bouquet, that are so desired from Shona sculptors. Though the figures are ambiguous and stylized, the figures are arranged using a hierarchy of scale: the matriarch (perhaps a grandmother) towers over the other members of her family, with her children and grandchildren below. Thusly, sculptures like this present a vision of family structure and unity.

'Ring of Hope' is an original Shona stone sculpture signed by the Zimbabwean artist Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira. This sculpture is an excellent example of his abstract works. Out of the stone emerge organic, curving figures – at once suggesting lips while also suggesting the form of a calla lily. These forms are balanced atop two leg-like stems. These floral themes are well reflected by the green hue color of the opal serpentine stone, a soft stone filled with color and texture when polished.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Huang Yulong was born in 1983 in Anhui Province, China. In 2007 he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in Jiangxi Province. As one of the new generation of Chinese artists and part of the ‘post-80s generation’ and ‘only child’ generation, Huang is strongly influenced by the phenomenon of foreign culture in China, which he combines with his fascination with pottery and the material world. Huang is best known for his sculptures of Buddhas in hoodies, displaying an exchange of Eastern tradition and Western contemporary style. He was selected by “Complex” as “25 Contemporary Chinese Artists You Need to Know” in 2013. 'Good Student' is an original sculpture signed by the Shona artist Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira. The sculpture depicts a young woman standing upright and facing the sky. Her body stands tall and long like a column, though she subtly shifts from one side to the other. In her right hand, she carries a stack of books, which along with her costume indicate she is a young student. The artist takes influence from the artist Colleen Madamombe in his treatment of the stone: her face and hands are polished and smooth, which is juxtaposed with the rough-carved texture of her hair and hands.
