Yves Brayer Animal Drawings and Watercolors

French, 1907-1990

Yves Brayer stands among the most celebrated modern French painters. Although Brayer was faithful to the figurative tradition, his ample métier was enriched by his vision. Brayer’s oeuvre proved to be very diverse, for besides his well-known landscapes, he also painted vast canvases, portraits and still lifes. A lover of Mediterranean landscapes, Brayer sojourned in Morocco, Spain and Italy before settling down in Provence. There, Brayer was enchanted by the diverse and architectural forms of the Alpilles mountains and by the vast expanse of the Camargue region with its ubiquitous white horses and black bulls. From then on, Brayer spent several months each year working in Provence. Brayer also traveled internationally, where he was quick to grasp the unique rhythm and light of each country. When Brayer was in Paris in 1942, Jacques Rouché appointed Brayer costume-and-set designer for a ballet at the Opera de Paris. Brayer passed away in Paris in 1990. A large collection of his paintings are on permanent display both at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Cordes, France and at the Musée Yves Brayer in Les Baux de Provence, as well as many regional museums in his home country. In the United States, Brayer's works form part of the collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, among others.

Hilaire Hiler “Pinto" 1933 Modernist Ink Drawing of Native American on Horseback
By Hilaire Hiler
Located in Denver, CO
This original 1933 black-and-white ink drawing, titled “Pinto,” is an exceptional example of Hilaire Hiler’s (1898–1966) distinctive modernist style. The artwork depicts a Native American rider wearing a feathered headdress, confidently mounted on horseback. Executed in fine ink on vellum, Hiler’s composition combines elegant linework, rhythmic movement, and minimalist form, showcasing his mastery of modernist abstraction and figurative expression. The drawing is signed by the artist in the lower right corner, confirming authenticity and adding significant collector value. Custom framing options are available to complement this timeless work on paper. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and raised in Rhode Island, Hilaire Hiler studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the University of Paris. After years in Paris’s avant-garde art scene (1919–1934), he moved to San Francisco, where he contributed to the WPA’s Aquatic Park...

Horses at the Edge of the Pond
By Yves Brayer
Located in London, GB
'Horses at the Edge of the Pond', pencil, ink and watercolour on art paper, by Yves Brayer (1980). Brayer loved the Camargue region of France and painted it widely. The Camargue is a vast, swampy delta near Arles, very exotic, with tall marsh grasses where pink flamingos, black bulls and white horses roam freely. This image depicts three horses in the Camargue near pond's edge. Although there are many horses that still run free in the area, there are cowboys — called gardians — who ride the white horses on the beaches...
