Charles Ray Eames DAR Eiffel Rope Edge Chair, 1st Generation, 1950
By Herman Miller, Charles and Ray Eames, Zenith
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Charles Eames (1907-1978) Ray Eames (1912-1988) for Zenith Plastics / HermanMiller DAR Eiffel rope-edge chair Venice, California / Zeeland, Michigan, 1950 fiberglass, enameled steel early sticker label Measures: 24 7/8" W x 23 5/8" D x 31 3/8" H All original parts, including rare first gen. feet, which date the piece to the first batch of production (1950). Labelled. Gorgeous museum worthy piece. Quite possibly one of the most famous and iconic chairs ever, the Eames DAR would most commonly become known as the ‘eiffel chair’ due to its sculptured wire base resembling that of Europe’s most notorious landmark. The very first generation of the Eames DAR Eiffel Chair was recognizable not only for the ‘rope edge’ shell but also due to the protruding ‘1st gen’ feet as opposed to boot glides or later plastic feet. The abbreviated Eames DAR Chair stands for the Eames Dining (D) height, Arm (A) Chair, on Rod (R) Base released in the first year of arm chair production of the fiberglass series developed to the marketplace in 1950. The early success of the Eames arm chairs, released in 1950, was a co-ordinated effort between the Eames . Office (Designers), Zenith Plastics (Manufacturers) and Herman Miller (Distributors). The chair series was always designed to have interchangeable bases and the DAR was one of the ‘original 5’ alongside the DAX X-base, LAR cats cradle...

DUNHILL PARIS 1952 Aldunil Gas Pocket Lighter In 18kt Gold Vermeil .800 Silver
By Alfred Dunhill
Located in Miami, FL
Aldunil gas lighter designed by Alfred Dunhill This is a very rare gas pocket-lighter, created in France for the Alfred Dunhill Company in Paris, back in the 1952. This semi-automatic lighter is the iconic and popular Aldunil model, crafted with art deco patterns in solid .800/.999 sterling silver with 18 karats rose-gold vermeil. All finished with high polish and substantial weight. This very early Aldunil Dunhill lighter is highly collectible and is decorated with diagonal undulates ribbed lines. Model: ALDUNIL. First Produced: Paris, France 1952. Material: 18 karats rose gold. over .800 Sterling silver. Weight: 74.4 Grams, (47.70 Dwt). Measurements: 60 mm by 23 mm by 12 mm (2.36 x 0.91 x 0.47 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with French marks: the jewelry atelier maker's mark, three times with the mark of the Crab for the assay of the .800 silver, the Parisian maker's mark, the reference number, the six-digits serial number and signed in full as follow, "DUNHILL PARIS 64 134482". Alfred Dunhill He inherited his father’s London saddlery in 1893. Following the increase in motor car ownership, Alfred developed the business to include motoring accessories, which he called ‘Dunhill’s Motorities’. This included goggles, timepieces, picnic sets, and leather coats, and it wasn’t long before the brand became associated with men’s general motoring attire. They opened two shops in Mayfair and had a catalogue of over 1300 items. Between the 1904 and 1905, Dunhill introduced their ‘Windshield Pipe’, to help drivers combat the effect of wind and travel on their ability to smoke. This marked both the end of the ‘motorities’ focus and their entry into the world of smoking ephemera, and they shortly opened their first tobacconist in 1907 on Duke Street. The proximity to several esteemed Private Members Clubs around the Mayfair, St James’ area ensured that the venture was a success. (From Nicholas Wells With Thanks). Literature: Blei-Bottoni, The Dunhill Petrol Lighter "A Unique Story", Unique SRL 2004 first edition. Figure-571 Pp-284 for illustrations of this model in silver and gold. Questions About Zenith Furniture
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The second generation of the Rolex Zenith started with a similar style to the original model featuring three subdials and an outer ring contrasted against it. The luxurious Rolex Zenith features sapphire crystals and crown guards for protection against scratches. Shop a collection of authentic Rolex Zenith watches from top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
A number of celebrities wear Zenith watches. They include Chinese actor and singer Xiao Zhan, NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers, street artist Felipe Pantone, DJ Carl Cox, actor Will Ferrell, professional tennis player Patrick Mouratoglou and actor Nicolas Cage. Japanese gymnast and television personality Airi Hatakeyama also frequently wears timepieces from the luxury watchmaker's women's collection. Explore a range of Zenith watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024
What happened to Zenith watches was that the ownership of the watchmaker changed hands. During the quartz crisis of the 1970s and ’80s, Zenith suffered financial setbacks and struggled to recover during the ’90s. However, Louis Vuitton-Moët Hennesy (LVMH), the luxury goods company that also owns TAG Heuer and Hublot, purchased Zenith in 1999 and revived the brand. On 1stDibs, shop a range of Zenith watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The simplest way to identify a Zenith Daytona is the placement of the sub-dials in the watch face. In Daytona watches that feature a Zenith movement inside, a 30-minute dial is set at the 3 o’clock mark, while a 12-hour dial is set at the 6 o’clock mark and a running seconds dial is set at the 9 o’clock mark. On 1stDibs, find a range of Zenith Daytona watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 30, 2024
Many watch lovers believe that Zenith watches are worth buying. Since 1865, the Swiss manufacturer has become known for producing reliable timepieces, and the company has won more than 2,300 watch design prizes throughout its more than 150-year history. Some of the maker's timepieces that are popular among collectors include the Pilot Cronometro Tipo CP-2, the Elite Captain Central Second Silver Sunray Dial, the Chronomaster El Primero and the Zenith Defy Zero G. However, whether or not it’s worth investing in Zenith watches is totally subjective! At 1stDibs, we believe in buying what you love. Our shopping experience enables discovery and learning, whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or just beginning your collection. Find Zenith watches and other watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024
No, Zenith isn't better than Omega. These two luxury watch brands are both universally heralded. Over the last few years, Zenith has seen a resurgence in popularity, and its Zenith El Primero movement is of fine enough quality to now be used in some Rolex chronograph watches. It’s a celebrated part of Omega lore that the brand’s Speedmaster Professional Chronograph was the first watch to make a lunar landing. The house’s origins date much further back to 1848, when Swiss watchmaker Louis Brandt first set up shop. When shopping for a watch, you should think about what you’re looking for in this type of accessory. You may wish to consider the power reserve, the materials, its accuracy, the craftsmanship, where it was manufactured and more. Find a collection of watches for sale on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024
Yes, Zenith watches are Swiss-made. The luxury watchmaker has its atelier in Le Locle, which is in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Founded in 1865, the workshop has the distinction of being the first modern watch manufacturer. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Zenith watches.
