Pierre Bonnard war ein französischer Maler, Illustrator und Grafiker, der 1867 geboren wurde. Er ist vor allem für die stilisierten dekorativen Qualitäten seiner Gemälde und seine kühne Verwendung von Farbe bekannt. Er malte Landschaften, Stadtszenen, Porträts und intime häusliche Szenen, wobei die Hintergründe, die Farben und der Malstil in der Regel Vorrang vor dem Thema hatten. Er war Gründungsmitglied der postimpressionistischen Avantgarde-Malergruppe Les Nabis. Er war auch eine führende Figur beim Übergang vom Impressionismus zum Modernismus.
