The boards were executed with a stencil according to the collages and on the cutouts of Henri Matisse, by Edmond Vairel who used the same linel gouaches as the artist. The cover and pages of the manuscript were engraved and printed by Draeger Freres. He shot on velin d'Arches, CCL examples, numbered from I to CCL and XX non-commerce copies numbered from I to XX. All examples were signed by the artist. It was also released in C albums containing exclusively all the boards of the album. Example number XLIII. Facsimile of the colophon to the original edition of CCL examples, signed by the artist and published by Teriade for Editions Verve on 30 September 1947.

Originally conceived and published in 1947 by Teriade for Editions Verve, the portfolio paired Matisse’s bold paper cut-out compositions with his poetic handwritten reflections on art and life. The 1983 George Braziller second edition, produced in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art, New York, faithfully recreates the 20 color plates and accompanying texts of the original Verve edition using the heliogravure process to capture the vibrancy and texture of the gouache decoupages. Printed by Ernst Wartelsteiner in Munich and bound by R. Oldenbourg GmbH, this second edition sought to preserve the visual intensity and tactile essence of Matisse’s late style, offering a museum-quality publication of one of modern art’s most iconic fine art works. Through Jazz, Matisse transcended the boundaries of traditional media, transforming cut paper into pure color and emotion—a visual symphony of joy, rhythm, and creative freedom.
