André Derain

André Derain ist vor allem als führender Vertreter der Avantgarde-Bewegung und - neben Henri Matisse - als Mitbegründer des Fauvismus zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts bekannt. Derains innovative Verwendung von ausdrucksstarken Farben und vereinfachten Formen in seinen figurativen Gemälden, Landschaften und Porträts verblüffen nach wie vor Sammler und Kunstliebhaber in aller Welt.

Derain wurde 1880 in Chatou, Frankreich, geboren und begann seine formale Kunstausbildung im Alter von 18 Jahren an der Académie Camillo, wo er Matisse und Maurice de Vlaminck traf. 1905 stellten Derain, Matisse und de Vlaminck ihre Werke auf dem Salon d'Automne in Paris aus, wo der Kritiker Louis Vauxcelles das Wort fauves (wilde Tiere) benutzte, um das lose verbundene Künstlerkollektiv zu beschreiben, das in seinen energiegeladenen Werken eine kühne, lebhafte Farbgebung bevorzugte, was schließlich zu einer breiten Übernahme des Begriffs Fauvismus führte.
