Signed 'SL' and makers mark 'R' with three crowns. Sylvia Leuchovius (1915–2003) was a Swedish ceramist, designer, and artist whose poetic and expressive work made her one of the notable figures in mid-20th-century Swedish ceramics. She was born on 29 March 1915 in Linneryd, Småland, the only daughter of organist and church singer Karl Johan Leuchovius and his wife Frida Elvira, and grew up with her three brothers before the family eventually moved to Alingsås near Gothenburg. As a young woman Leuchovius was fascinated by fashion and drawing, and although she initially trained as a seamstress, she later pursued her artistic ambitions by enrolling, at the age of 30, in the School of Design and Crafts (Slöjdföreningens skola, now HDK-Valand) in Gothenburg, where she studied decorative arts and graphics and graduated in 1949. Immediately after completing her education, Leuchovius was recommended by her school’s headmaster to the prestigious Rörstrand Porslinsfabrik in Lidköping, where she began working the same year as an artist tasked with developing ceramic decors. At Rörstrand she found her voice in stoneware, producing unique wall plaques, figures, and flintstone trays decorated with ceramic still-life compositions. In 1952, Rörstrand showcased the work of four of their ceramists - Hertha Bengtson, Marianne Westman, Maria Hackman-Dahlén, and Leuchovius - and critics noted the romantic tone of her wall plaques, singling out her fish motifs for their evocative quality reminiscent of Persian enamel. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Leuchovius’s work gained recognition both in Sweden and internationally. She was commissioned to create a large relief for the Tolered Library in Gothenburg and was awarded a silver medal (medaglia d’argento) at the Milan Triennial for her ceramics. Her pieces were included in major exhibitions, such as the crafts shows in Stockholm and a notable Nordic ceramics exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1959, where her chamotte plates with slip decoration and subdued glazes were praised in the Sunday Times alongside works by other leading Scandinavian ceramists. She also participated in the 1960 Nordic ceramics exhibition in New York, where her poetic imagery of plants, birds, and children was described as “poetry in clay and colour.” In 1962 Leuchovius held her first solo exhibition at Rörstrand’s new gallery space on Valhallavägen in Stockholm, showcasing an array of wall plaques, vases, and sculptural eggs with delicate modelling and transparent glazes. Many of her works were not wheel-thrown but hand-built, with relief effects created by rolling tiny clay spheres and applying them to the surface to evoke texture and depth. In the following years, Nordiska Kompaniet presented a limited collection of her studio-made vases, dishes, and wall plaques marked with her initials SL or S Leuchovius, and Rörstrand featured her unique stoneware in its central Stockholm showroom. She also received cultural scholarships from the county councils of Skaraborg and Älvsborg for her contributions to Swedish ceramic art. When Rörstrand began to wind down its in-house art workshop in 1971, Leuchovius was among the artists let go, but she was quickly rehired as a freelance designer. In this role she designed the coffee service Select and the decors for the Paljette and Toscana services, and in 1976, on the occasion of Rörstrand’s 250-year jubilee, she was entrusted with decorating the commemorative service Sylvia, a 23-piece feldspar porcelain set that celebrated the factory’s heritage. After another solo show in 1976 featuring her most recent ceramic work, she retired and returned to Alingsås, where she spent her final years developing her painting. Over her long career Leuchovius participated in around 40 exhibitions for Rörstrand at home and abroad, undertook study trips to Belgium, the United States, and Italy, and created ceramics with warm, poetic motifs that continue to be appreciated by collectors. Her public ceramic decorations can be seen at places such as Kungsladugård School in Gothenburg and Lidköping Hospital, and her work is represented in the collections of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, as well as institutions in Trondheim and the United States. She died on 31 March 2003 at the age of 88 and is buried at Alingsås City Cemetery.
