4to, 11 1/4 x 8 5/8 inches (280 x 220 mm); xvi, 240 pp. + 128 illustrations (11 in color) on 59 plates. Illustrations are printed on glossy paper, each item is identified and captioned on the facing tissue guard. 1-10 are in color and distributed among the text pages; plates 11 to 59 are in black
white. Brown cloth cover with a gold bird on a branch motif on the front cover and gilt title on spine. Light rubbing on the corners and extremities of the spine; binding firm and square, hinges intact; text pages clean and evenly toned, plates clean and bright. Order form for "Animals in Chinese Art" loosely inserted.

An introduction to the classic period of Chinese porcelain. The author, Robert Lockhart Hobson (1872 - 1941), was keeper of the Department of Ceramics and Ethnography at the British Museum and an authority on far eastern ceramics. He was noted for his cataloguing which The London Times described as establishing firm facts for what had previously been "unproved tradition." Hobson's writing was influential in elevating Chinese ceramics in Western eyes from crafts to the status of fine art objects. He was president of the Oriental Ceramic Society from 1939 to 1942.
This book explains and illustrates as many varieties of Ming as possible. The first 12 chapters are occupied almost exclusively by the porcelain of Ching-te Chen; the next four by the porcelain and pottery made at other centers. For the convenience of the printing, all the Chinese characters have been collected together in the final chapter, to which reference is made in each case.
