This richly hued Antique Gendje Shirvan Runner Rug is a fascinating example of transitional weaving from the East Caucasus, dating back to the late 19th century. Measuring 133 x 254 cm (approx. 4'4" x 8'4"), this runner beautifully combines the sophisticated colorwork of Shirvan with the bold, graphic sensibilities of Gendje weaving.
The central field features a rare and luminous golden-yellow/camel ground, densely covered with a repeating, detailed lattice or diamond motif rendered in contrasting shades of deep indigo, madder red, and muted blue. This busy, textural pattern is enclosed within a crisp red outline, which highlights the field's warmth.
The surrounding borders are a tapestry of tribal symbols. The main border showcases a prominent pattern of stylized "arrow" or "V" motifs in red and ivory, interspersed with angular geometric designs.
