Description
This large chromolithographic plate depicts the sugarcane variety known as Teboe Cheribon and was published in Berlin in 1892 as part of Friedrich Soltwedel’s significant botanical study Formen und Farben von Saccharum officinarum L. und verwandten Arten. Printed by W. A. Meyn, the plate exemplifies the high standard of late nineteenth-century scientific illustration devoted to agricultural research in the Dutch East Indies.
Plate II is particularly striking within the series because it presents the plant in several stages of growth. Two tall standing canes are shown with long, arching leaves, while additional smaller figures illustrate juvenile plants and root structures. This comprehensive depiction provides insight into both the mature form and early development of the variety, reflecting the comparative and instructional purpose of Soltwedel’s work.
“Teboe Cheribon” takes its name from the region of Cirebon (Cheribon) on the north coast of Java, an area historically associated with sugarcane cultivation. The composition combines scientific clarity with a strong vertical rhythm, while the restrained palette of greens and warm browns gives the plate an elegant, architectural presence.
Issued separately from the accompanying text volume, Soltwedel’s chromolithographic plates are now scarce, particularly examples that include full plant studies rather than only sectional views. This plate appeals equally to collectors of botanical prints, historians of colonial agriculture, and interior designers seeking tall, refined imagery with historical depth.
Condition report
One plate in very good condition for its age. Light, even age toning and minor surface marks consistent with atlas plates. Slight marginal wear. Colours remain fresh and well preserved. Plate mark visible. No significant tears or losses.
Framing suggestions
Best framed vertically to emphasize the height of the standing canes. A slim dark walnut or ebonized frame with an ivory or parchment mat creates a museum-style presentation. Alternatively, a muted antique gold frame adds warmth while preserving a refined botanical character. Wide matting is recommended to retain the original margins and enhance visual impact.
