The George III design, named after the English monarch, is characterized by clean lines and high-quality wood. This Circa 1760 chest is crafted entirely from mahogany, featuring three graduated drawers lined with white pine. The drawer fronts are veneered in flame mahogany and adorned with their original brass handles. Many craftsmen favored mahogany for its durability and rich coloring. Given the expense of procuring mahogany, items made from this wood were typically intended for affluent buyers. Petite chests like this one often include a discreet brushing slide at the top, which pulls out with a small brass knob to reveal a surface for laying out clothes to be brushed before wearing.
