A rare and exceptionally handsome 1920s Majolica character mug by Sarreguemines, France, depicting a youthful Napoleon Bonaparte in vibrant color and exquisite detail. This beautifully modeled mug captures Napoleon with piercing gray eyes, a crisp red and green military uniform, and his iconic bicorne hat, rendered in classic French Majolica glaze. The interior reveals a luminous blue-green glaze, a hallmark of Sarreguemines’ artistry during the early 20th century. An example of this exact mug is held in the permanent collection of the Sarreguemines Museum, underscoring its importance as a collectible and its rarity on the market. The underside is clearly stamped: “Sarreguemines France, 461.” This piece is in excellent vintage condition, with only minor surface wear to the base and no chips, cracks, or repairs, a remarkable preservation for a nearly century-old ceramic. Character mugs, also known as face mugs or toby jugs, became highly collectible in the 19th and early 20th centuries, prized for their artistry and humor.
