18th Century Spanish Leather and Brass Nailhead Domed Trunk with Original Key

This handsome Spanish trunk was crafted circa 1780 and features a domed wooden frame clad in hand-stitched leather, richly decorated with large and small brass nailheads in a rhythmic, geometric pattern. The ornamentation reflects the cuero claveteado tradition, an iconic technique of Spanish and Spanish Colonial craftsmanship. The hinged lid opens to reveal a divided wood interior, originally intended for storing valuables or personal effects. Original iron hardware, including strap hinges, lockplate, and key, remains intact (lock not working however). The exterior displays a deep, timeworn patina with softened edges and natural surface wear that speaks to over two centuries of use. An excellent example of the classic dome top Spanish "arcón" or travel chest / trunk. Constructed of wood, the exterior is completely covered in a dark brown leather and the top and front feature studded brass nails arranged in decorative patterns. The nailheads themselves are decorated with raised star shape. The functioning lock mechanism (key included), hasp and side carry handles are original and made of wrought iron. Included are a pair of matching studded leather "feet" or supports which raise the trunk off of the floor allowing air to circulate, thus protecting the bottom from moisture.
