We acquired this extraordinary pendant from an antique jewelry dealer in New Zealand.
Sort of a hybrid between a garland and a wreath, it boasts at least 1.7 carats in old cut diamonds plus eight pearls, all meticulously set from its hinged bale to its hinged diamond "tail."
The enhancer bale is split in the back so that it can be worn with pearls. To that end, we're including a gorgeous 16" strand of 5.5 to 6mm Akoya saltwater pearls. We had these pearls strung specifically for this pendant, and to give the necklace a more contemporary feel, the pearls have been fully knotted in black silk, which we think really pops with the oxidized face of the pendant. The closure is a 14 karat white gold pearl clasp.

METALS & PENDANT AGE:
We think this pendant probably dates from the late 19th or very early 20th century. While the pearls and the diamonds provide clues, the big tipoff is the fact that the stones are set in a thin layer of silver soldered onto 14 karat gold. This technique -- a thin layer of white metal (platinum was also used after around 1870) -- was used until white gold came into general use in the mid- to late 1910s. The distinctive black metal finish is nothing more than generations of the silver's natural oxidization.

What to do with a little 14 karat frog that's been hopping around the store for so long no one remembers where he came from?
Answer? Attach him to the kind of gemstone a frog would love: a big drop-shaped faceted cabochon of moss agate. This is a type of quartz with a white or clear body color, but shot through with fern-link green inclusions (mostly manganese and something called hornblende, the description of which is so geoscience-y that we just don't want to go there).
The chubby little frog has diamond eyes (about 0.01 carats each) and that sweetly contented expression that makes frogs so lovable, despite the fact they live in swamps and don't really seem to be all that sociable toward humans. We can dream, can't we?
The stone is wrapped in a 14 karat gold frame made from a hand-sculpted wax mold by Eytan Brandes.

This necklace features one of Eytan Brandes' signature designs - a dancer spinning in her own web of movement. This version includes a little extra -- a barqoue freshwater pearl "cloud" that our dancing dervish seems to be plucking out of the air.
The pendant is meticulously set with 51 tiny round diamonds in various sizes up to 1.3mm; Eytan wanted them to look like they just naturally collected into little pools of light. These diamonds are all natural (i.e., earth-mined) and untreated stones with a total diamond weight of 0.34 carats. Our supplier rated this parcel G-H color and high SI or low VS clarity.
The pearl is a freshwater baroque, glossy white and chosen specifically for its shape: our dancer appears is pressing her cloud at both ends, so we wanted a pearl that appeared to be a bit smooshed-looking -- like a pillow being caught between two hands.

Two fat little mice in 14 karat yellow gold with silver-blue Tahitian pearl bodies hang happily by their tails from a string of sparkling aquamarine beads.
These mice are based on an antique silver charm that we've had in the store for a while. The silver version had a rock crystal bead for a body and no tail, but we thought he would be a great delivery system for pearls.
The pearls are smallish Tahitians and in an unusual silver-blue shade you'd more likely associate with Akoya pearls. They're from our trusted pearl dealer, George Hajjar of Seven Seas Pearls with offices in Tokyo and Los Angeles. Mr. Hajjar deals only with saltwater pearls (Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian), and he only deals directly with the pearl farms, so we always know we're getting the real deal.
The pearls are baroque in shape and measure 9mm and 11.3mm in diameter. They both show great color and luster, plus some natural flaws -- a few dents, lumps and bumps and a circle (on the larger pearl) but no off-color pits or dull spots.
Their long wire tails form loops for hanging from a chain or cord. We think they look great with the aquamarine bead chain...

Eytan Brandes cast one of his old silver coins in 22 karat gold. It shows a beardless youth, possibly an early emperor (most of them wore beards after 117AD), as suggested by the diadem tied at the back of his neck.
No clue about the image on the back. With the lettering oriented north (and upside down), you can maybe see the neck of a horned animal, but that might just be us seeing things in a Rorschach test.
To frame this little homage to ancient commerce, Eytan crafted a platinum frame with four prongs on each side.
The pyrite chain, which we made specifically for this pendant, has a 14 karat white gold lobster closure.*

This one-of-a-kind pendant by Eytan Brandes features a freeform slice of gold, set with a diamond, over a freeform slice of goshenite.
Goshenite is a variety of beryl -- basically aquamarine without color. We acquired a little pile of this stuff -- the palest of pale blue and oddly cut -- and were at a loss as to what to do with it until Eytan hit on the idea of setting one of them in a bezel with an oxidized (blackened) inside pan. We love the end result. The swirly pattern of the oxidization plus the faceting plus the minute coloration of the stone combine to give this humble gem a truly unique, shimmery look -- worthy, even, of a hearty "Gosh!" (if anyone actually said "gosh" anymore...)
By contrast, the diamond, bezel-set to float in the opening of Eytan's 18 karat gold shard, involves absolutely no hanky-panky. It's an earth-mined, natural and untreated stone weighing 0.04 carats -- a small but high quality sparkler (Eytan rates it G-H color and VS2 clarity).
The hand-wrought pulled wire bale is roughly oval-shaped and oversized, since Eytan envisioned his pendant would be paired with beads (which generally require a bigger bale than a chain), but removable. We think our choker-length strand of faceted but rough sapphire...

Eytan's latest hamsa is a redo of an earlier design. We call this design his Melee Muncher because it's the perfect platform for recycled diamonds -- stones extracted from jewelry that customers have brought in for melt value. These diamonds range in color and clarity and are generally fairly pedestrian -- in the SI range with a couple of VS2's -- but they're perfect for this pendant because, with the black background and the tight pavé, they can't help but pop. We love the idea of putting these stones to good use, and we love the way the mix of clarities and colors looks in such a tight formation.
Two of the diamonds are single cuts and at least two are transitional (high crowns and tiny tables). The rest are full cuts. They range in size from 1mm to 2.5mm; the total carat weight for all 25 diamonds of 0.65 carats.
The pendant is 14 karat rose gold with a satiny finish and a nice big top ring that will accommodate lots of different chain options, but we like our new garnet and rough diamond bead strand.

This hamsa is one of Eytan Brandes' older designs, but he has realized it in many different iterations over the years, always keeping it fresh.
In shimmery, satin-finished 18 karat yellow gold, this latest version is the first time he's tried opening up one side.
The other side is pavé-set with 25 diamonds. In keeping with tradition, he used all different size stones because this design is one of Eytan's favorite ways of using diamonds from Eytan's Big Box o' Recycled Diamonds! These are stones, mostly of average or below average clarity -- pulled from the thousands of pieces of jewelry that have come through the store over the years on their way to be melted and made by Eytan into something better.
The stones used for this pendant range in size from 0.8mm to 2.2mm for a total diamond weight of 0.78 carats. Eytan used diamonds that would be considered "slightly included," avoiding the ones that would be classified as "included." (In other words, he used SI1-2's and avoided the I's, with the exception of the stone at the very top, which is a straight I2.)
Most of the stones are full cut, but since a lot of these diamonds came from older jewelry, there are a few single cuts as well.
Meticulously set, everybody gets their job done, especially set against yellow gold, which can't help but elevate their color.
All stones are earth-mined, natural and untreated.
We love putting these stones to good use, and we love the way a bit of careful sorting can bring stones from 25 different pieces of uninspired jewelry together to act as a unified team in something new, beautiful and wearable. Go team!
