Steuben Glass & 18K Gold “Trout & Fly” by James Houston, Introduced 1966
American, Steuben Glass Works, Corning, New York
Crystal and 18k Gold • Signed • H. 8 in. × W. 6.5 in. × D. 2 in.
A masterwork of American glass artistry, this signed Steuben crystal sculpture, “Trout & Fly,” was designed by James Houston and first introduced in 1966. Houston, one of Steuben’s most celebrated designers, was widely known for his wildlife studies in glass, many inspired by his time in the Canadian Arctic and his reverence for the natural world.
The sculpture depicts a trout captured in a moment of suspended motion, arcing upward from stylized swirling water in pursuit of an exquisitely detailed 18k gold mayfly. The insect, mounted on a fine wire stem, hovers delicately at the fish’s open mouth, completing the narrative of predator and prey.
Techniques & Materials
Steuben Crystal: Hand-blown, optically pure crystal, polished to a flawless surface. Steuben’s proprietary formula, developed in the early 20th century, is distinguished by its extraordinary clarity and brilliance.
Controlled Bubble Inclusions: The fish’s body is decorated with perfectly placed air bubbles, achieved through expert manipulation of molten glass. These bubbles evoke the shimmer of scales and the sparkle of water.
Cold-Polished Detailing: Fin edges, mouth, and wave-like base are sharply defined through precise polishing, heightening the sense of motion.
18k Gold Mayfly: The hand-wrought gold insect is finely chased to suggest delicate wings and naturalistic form, providing a striking contrast to the crystal’s transparency.
Designer: James Houston (1921–2005)
Houston joined Steuben in 1952 and became one of its leading designers, bringing a lyrical naturalism to the company’s repertoire. His works—including Arctic wildlife, fish, and avian studies—are considered icons of mid-20th-century American glass design. The “Trout & Fly” exemplifies Houston’s hallmark blend of simplicity, symbolism, and technical virtuosity.
Introduced in 1966 (Steuben design no. 1002-ST). This example bears the engraved Steuben signature at the base.
The composition celebrates the vitality of nature and the drama of survival. The trout, emblematic of strength and perseverance, leaps toward a fleeting mayfly—an insect long associated with the fragility and transience of life. Together, they capture a timeless moment of balance in the natural cycle.

Pair of Continental Carved and Polychromed Wooden Cornucopias, 19th Century
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Pair of Continental Carved and Polychromed Wooden Cornucopias, 19th Century
These finely carved and polychromed wooden cornucopias exemplify the enduring symbolic power of the horn of plenty in European decorative arts. Each composition is rendered in high relief, the ribbed horn issuing an abundant cascade of fruit and vegetables—pomegranates, grapes, melons, pumpkins, gourds, citrus, corn, and floral sprays—arranged with exuberant Baroque fullness. Now mounted on forged iron bases for display, the pair measures 20" high × 28" wide × 3.5" deep, including stands 12.5" x 6" (carvings alone 28" wide × 17" high × 3.5" deep).
The Cornucopia in History
Originating in antiquity, the cornucopia (Latin cornu copiae) was first associated with Amalthea, the goat who suckled the infant Zeus, whose horn became a miraculous source of nourishment. In Roman culture it was carried by deities of abundance—Fortuna, Abundantia, and Ceres—as an emblem of civic prosperity and the cycles of nature. Revived in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the cornucopia became a favored motif in architecture, painting, and decorative arts, symbolizing divine blessing, seasonal plenty, and the wealth of the natural world.
Iconography of the Fruits and Vegetables
The profusion of produce is not merely decorative but encodes symbolic meanings rooted in both classical and Christian traditions:
Pomegranates—fertility, eternal life, and resurrection.
Grapes—festivity, vintage, and the Eucharistic blood of Christ.
Melons and Watermelon Slices—sensual abundance, refreshment, and ephemeral pleasure.
Pumpkins and Gourds—autumn harvest, transformation, and the cycles of plenty.
Corn (Maize)—sustenance and prosperity, reflecting New World influence on European symbolism.
Citrus Fruits—health, luxury, and Mediterranean prosperity.
Floral Sprays—seasonal beauty and the transience of life, underscoring vanitas themes common in still-life art.
This allegorical language aligns the carvings with the broader European tradition of abundance imagery found in still-life painting, silverwork, and architectural ornament.
Continental Style and Possible Origin
The sculptural density, dramatic overlapping of forms, and naturalistic rendering suggest a Continental origin, likely Austrian, German, or Italian, c. late 19th century. While Swedish decorative carving of the same era tends toward flatter surfaces and folk stylization, these examples embody a more theatrical Baroque and Rococo inheritance, later enhanced with a polychrome or silver-toned surface to heighten their decorative impact. Originally conceived as architectural appliqués...

Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Late 19th Century French Fire-Gilt Ormolu and Cut Crystal Table Casket, Attributed to Baccarat
A refined French fire-gilt ormolu and cut crystal table box, dating to the late 19th century and attributed to Baccarat. The rectangular casket is executed in heavy crystal, cut in the pointe de diamant (diamond point) pattern, with a richly faceted surface that sparkles with light. The base is finished with a classic starburst cut (étoile taillée), a hallmark of Baccarat’s precision craftsmanship.
The crystal is mounted in finely chased fire-gilt bronze, the band encircling the box decorated with laurel leaf and berry motifs, symbols of victory, eternity, and refinement within the French neoclassical tradition. The lockplate is adorned with a foliate wreath surrounding the keyhole, adding both ornamental and symbolic significance, as the casket was intended to hold cherished personal objects, jewels, or keepsakes.
The ormolu mount retains a rich, warm fire gilding, applied by the traditional mercury gilding process, and features a continuous rear hinge—an indicator of the precision fittings used by Baccarat and other leading Parisian luxury workshops of the period. The box opens to a generous interior, ideal for use as a boîte à bijoux (jewel casket), boîte à bonbons (sweetmeat box), or wedding casket...

Gorham Aesthetic Movement Sterling Mixed-Metal Box with Lizard and Mice, 1883
By Gorham CO.

Gorham Aesthetic Movement Sterling Mixed-Metal Box with Lizard and Mice, 1883
Dimensions: 3.5" W × 2.5" D × 1.5" H
Materials: Copper with applied silver decoration
Marks: Gorham, date letter “P” for 1883
A finely crafted American Aesthetic Movement mixed-metal box by Gorham, executed in copper with sculptural silver appliqué. The domed lid features a dynamic lizard in high relief, accompanied by two playful mice in motion, all arranged above a silvered ground with grasses and textured earth. The decoration is set asymmetrically against the warm copper body, leaving generous areas of polished surface that highlight the contrast between metals. The interior is left plain, showing use consistent with age.
The imagery reflects the strong influence of Japanese Meiji-era design on Gorham in the late 19th century. Themes of small animals and naturalistic vignettes were drawn directly from Japanese art, where lizards were regarded as symbols of protection and renewal, and mice were associated with quickness, fertility, and in some contexts, good fortune. Together, they create a whimsical narrative of pursuit, rendered with wit and naturalistic detail.
This work exemplifies the Aesthetic Movement credo of “Art for Art’s Sake,” emphasizing beauty, asymmetry, and nature study over traditional allegory. Gorham’s mixed-metal line, developed in the wake of the 1876 Centennial Exposition, sought to rival Tiffany & Co. in innovation and design, producing decorative objects that were both functional and avant-garde.

Russian Silver Persian Cat Sculpture, Soviet Period, 88 Zolotnik, Marked "S.W."
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Highly Detailed Russian Silver, Soviet Period Persian Cat Sculpture with Garnet Eyes, 88 Zolotnik, Marked "S.W.," Circa 1950s
A finely modeled and intricately chased hollow silver sculpture of a long-haired domestic cat, likely modeled after the Persian or Himalayan breed. The animal is depicted in a seated posture, with a stylized curling tail and attentive expression, rendered with lifelike depth and emotional presence. The rich fur texture is deeply chased and subtly polished across high points, creating dramatic surface contrast and a tactile, almost lifelike softness.
The sculpture’s meticulous hand-chasing, naturalistic pose, and jewel-like eyes reflect the enduring influence of Karl Fabergé’s animalier tradition, particularly the small-scale silver and hardstone animal studies produced in his Moscow workshops at the turn of the 20th century. Like Fabergé’s celebrated menagerie, this piece captures both the anatomical accuracy and the spirited personality of its subject, elevating it from a decorative object to a work of art imbued with character and luxury.
The figure's eyes are set with smooth red cabochon stones—likely garnets or finely colored glass paste—enhancing its realistic gaze. The underside bears a Russian silver hallmark, including the “88” zolotnik standard (equivalent to .916 silver purity), along with the Latin-letter maker’s mark “S.W.,” attributed to a postwar Soviet-era workshop producing fine export silver.
Although the piece appears solid at first glance, it is finely executed as a sealed hollow-form casting using the lost-wax method, a traditional sculptural technique that allowed for rich surface modeling while minimizing weight. A faint rattle can be heard when the figure is gently moved, caused by a small remnant from the casting core or finishing process—a common occurrence in Russian and Continental silver animal figures...
