When the world thinks about the famous Group of Seven, this is likely the kind of image they recall—the quiet majesty of the Canadian wilderness. This lithograph by one of its youngest members, Alfred Joseph Casson is one of many classic landscapes he painted of the north—mountains, lakes, bare trees in the foreground rendered in his favoured bright palette of autumn colours—red, yellow, orange, a touch of green, and deep blue lakes against a cloudy white sky. Casson was an avid canoeist and spent many hours camping and drawing in northern Ontario often alongside fellow members of the Group. “I had to develop my own style. The Gazette des Beaux-Arts was a French art review, found in 1859 by Édouard Houssaye, with Charles Blanc as its first chief editor. Assia Visson Rubinstein was chief editor under the direction of George Wildenstein from 1928 until 1960. Her papers, which include all editions of the Gazette from this period, are intact at the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne in Dorigny. The Gazette was a world reference work on art history for nearly 100 years - one other editor in chief, from 1955 to 1987, was Jean Adhémar. It was bought in 1928 by the Wildenstein family, whose last representative was Daniel Wildenstein, its director from 1963 until his death in 2001. The review closed in 2002. Biography: Sidaner, (7 August 1862 – July 1939), an intimist painter, born to a French family in Port Louis, Mauritius. In 1870 he and his family settled in Dunkirk. Le Sidaner received most of his tutelage from the École des Beaux-Arts under the instruction of Alexandre Cabanel but later broke away due to artistic differences. This portfolio, entitled "Notre Pain Quotidien", consists of 13 lithographs from the original watercolors and gouaches by Maurice de Vlaminck, printed in 1963. These lithographs were printed by Daniel Jacomet and the four pages of typography about the artist were written by Pierre Bouchet. The portfolio begins with a forward written by French author, Georges Duhamel, as well as a justification page and a page of the artwork titles (see below). Each piece from this portfolio is numbered from the edition of 250 on Rives vellum paper, aside the editions numbered from 1 to 50 on Richard de Bas paper, and eleven numbered copies in Roman numerals reserved for the collaborators. The twelve pieces in the portfolio measure 17 x 20 inches and the lithograph on the cover of the portfolio measures 10.25 x 8.75 inches. Please see the artwork titles below: 1.
