This collection of English commemorative ware consists of a 1937 Edward VIII coronation tea set, two 1837 Edward VIII coronation plates, a 1937 Edward VIII coronation flute, and a 1939 plate commemorating George VI and Queen Elizabeth's trip to the United States and Canada. The Coronation tea set consists of a teapot, two cups, each with a saucer, a creamer and a coupe-shaped, open sugar bowl. The teapot, cups, creamer, and sugar bowl all feature Edward VIII's coronation portrait on the front and his seal on the back. The teapot, creamer, and sugar bowl are each circumscribed with gold trim and feature a delightful cracklature. Each piece is stamped "Made in England" and the teapot is also stamped "Lancasters LTD". The two conical-shaped teacups have handles which are decorated with a fine, royal blue line. The rim of each teacup, as well as their saucers, are also adorned with royal blue lines. Each piece is stamped "Made in England". The scalloped edged Edward VIII coronation plate offers a 24-karat gold trim and features Edward VIII's coronation portrait and seal, the back is stamped "L&Sons LTD". These interesting inkwells were crafted in Britain between the Victorian period and early to mid-20th century. The works have been created from horse hooves, applied with sterling silver mounts. Each hoof has been set onto a silver horseshoe and features a silver top and lid. Two of the tops have been engraved to imitate real horse hair, while the third is more simple, with banded ornament. All three have been given covers, two of which feature commemorative inscriptions. One lid states, ‘The Grey/1907-1917’ — presumably the name of the favourite racehorse, whose hoof this is — and another reads, ‘Mavourneen/ Died June 29th / Aged 53’. ‘Mavourneen’ is an Irish Gaelic word meaning ‘my beloved’. The dedicatee’s age of 53 implies that they were a human, perhaps a jokey, or racehorse owner. The lids open up onto a silver-lined interior, intended to be used for storing ink as part of a desk arrangement. The inkwells are stamped, on their underside, with silver hallmarks and maker’s marks, ‘J.T.’ and ‘C & CS’. This set of three horse hoof inkwells...

The subtly domed hinged cover of the box retains the original transfer depicting portraits of King Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark in addition to the coat of arms of Leeds.
