Andre Derain was born in Chatou France in 1880. He met Matisse early in his life but was conscripted into the French army in 1901. After his service and when released Matisse convinced his parents to allow him to stop training as an engineering student to develop his artistic talents. He devoted himself full time to painting and attended the Academie Julian. He developed his early important style with close friends Maurice de Vlaminck and Henri Matisse. This became known as Fauvism and helped to usher in the other modern movements in art throughout the 20th century. This extraordinary pair of Art Deco pieces, each depicting a pair of horses, one with its head up and one down, was executed in ink, colored pencil and gouache by Robert Reinhardt Von Liski, a Prussian-American artist. Beautifully and sensitively drawn by Paul Ulen, this single sheet includes two images of a half-nude male figure, seated and reclining, wearing loose worker pants and sporting a fashionable 1930s haircut. In each case, the figure's strong, muscular body is expressed in tones of light and shadow, confidently drawn in pencil. The gridded background suggests that the figures were studies for a larger wall mural, and indeed, a major mural-esque painting by Ulen, "Bricklayer at Rest," perhaps depicting the same model, is also available from Renaissance Man Antiques...

Beautifully realized in sanguine, a ruddy chalk, this view of a North African cityscape dominated by a wide, tumultuous sky and a mosque with a large, low dome and high minaret, was drawn by Misha Reznikoff, a Ukranian-American artist.
