This exquisite lithograph and pochoir after Cornelis de Vos (1584–1651), titled Enfant endormi (Sleeping child), originates from the 1968 folio Visages d Enfants. Quinze Dessins de Durer a Dufy Appartenant aux Collections des Musees Nationaux (Faces of Children. Fifteen Drawings from Durer to Dufy from the Collections of the National Museums), published by Editions Artistiques et Documentaires, Paris, and Daniel Jacomet, Editeur, Paris, and rendered and printed by Daniel Jacomet et Cie, Paris, 1968. The composition captures de Vos renowned sensitivity to childhood intimacy and quiet psychological presence, translated into twentieth century printmaking with remarkable softness and fidelity. Executed as a lithograph and pochoir on velin paper, archivally hinged on a velin support sheet as issued, this work measures 18.5 x 14 inches overall, with the image measuring approximately 9.84 x 7.68 inches. About the Artist: Cornelis de Vos (1584–1651) was a Flemish painter and draughtsman active in Antwerp whose refined portraiture, intimate genre scenes, and lyrical sense of humanity established him as one of the most accomplished figures of the Northern Baroque. Trained within the dynamic artistic environment shaped by Peter Paul Rubens, de Vos nevertheless distinguished himself through a more restrained, psychologically sensitive approach that emphasized emotional clarity over heroic grandeur. Closely associated with the Rubens circle and working alongside contemporaries such as Anthony van Dyck, he shared patrons and workshop practices while developing a signature style marked by elegant realism, exceptional draftsmanship, and a profound sensitivity to character. His portraits of children and family groups are especially celebrated for balancing formality with warmth and immediacy. Rooted in Flemish Renaissance traditions and animated by Baroque vitality, his work reflects a sophisticated command of color, light, and composition, achieving a harmony between idealization and observation that gives his paintings enduring appeal. The structural intelligence and psychological nuance of de Vos art resonate far beyond his own time, anticipating concerns later explored by modern masters including Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray.
