Acerca del artículo

This exquisite lithograph and pochoir after Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), titled Portrait de petite fille (Portrait of a young girl), originates from the 1968 folio Visages d Enfants. Quinze Dessins de Durer a Dufy Appartenant aux Collections des Musees Nationaux (Faces of Children. Fifteen Drawings from Durer to Dufy from the Collections of the National Museums), published by Editions Artistiques et Documentaires, Paris, and Daniel Jacomet, Editeur, Paris, and rendered and printed by Daniel Jacomet et Cie, Paris, 1968. The composition conveys Rubens extraordinary sensitivity to childhood expression and flesh, translated into twentieth century printmaking with remarkable warmth, softness, and fidelity to the original drawing. Quinze Dessins de Durer a Dufy Appartenant aux Collections des Musees Nationaux, issued in 1968, represents a landmark achievement in Parisian printmaking devoted to the faithful translation of historic master drawings into modern pochoir and lithographic form. Conceived and published by Daniel Jacomet in collaboration with Editions Artistiques et Documentaires, the album inaugurated a series dedicated to rendering canonical drawings with extraordinary precision, respecting line weight, tonal subtlety, and the original spirit of each work. Jacomets atelier was internationally renowned for its technical rigor and scholarly approach, bridging museum collections and contemporary print culture through meticulous craftsmanship. Drawing together works spanning centuries, from Albrecht Durer to Raoul Dufy, the album reflects a curatorial ambition rooted in pedagogy, preservation, and aesthetic continuity. Produced in strictly limited examples, including a small number outside the trade, the album exemplifies the highest standards of mid twentieth century Parisian printmaking and remains valued for its role in transmitting the legacy of master draughtsmanship to collectors, institutions, and scholars. About the Artist: Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) was a Flemish painter, diplomat, humanist, and intellectual polymath whose vast imagination, classical learning, and unmatched pictorial energy established him as the defining force of the Baroque and one of the most influential artists in the entire history of Western art. Born in Siegen and active primarily in Antwerp, Rubens combined a rigorous humanist education with exceptional artistic training, mastering languages, history, philosophy, and classical literature, all of which informed the extraordinary narrative depth and intellectual ambition of his paintings. Extended travels in Italy proved decisive, where he absorbed the anatomical power of Michelangelo, the luminous color and sensuality of Titian and Veronese, the dramatic clarity of Raphael, and the grandeur of ancient Roman sculpture, synthesizing these sources into a dynamic personal language defined by muscular form, sweeping movement, opulent color, and emotional immediacy. Returning to Flanders, Rubens established one of the most sophisticated workshops in art history, producing monumental altarpieces, mythological cycles, royal portraits, allegories, landscapes, and hunting scenes that shaped the visual culture of Catholic Europe while influencing peers such as Anthony van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, and Diego Velazquez. His role as a court painter and diplomat further expanded his reach, allowing him to work directly for the courts of Spain, France, England, and the Habsburgs, seamlessly uniting political power, intellectual prestige, and artistic mastery. Rubens synthesis of classical structure and expressive freedom reverberated across centuries, profoundly influencing later masters and modern innovators including Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, each of whom recognized in Rubens a precedent for scale, rhythm, sensuality, and conceptual ambition. From Eugene Delacroix and Pierre Auguste Renoir to modern figurative, expressionist, and abstract painters, his work has remained a touchstone for artists seeking to reconcile intellectual rigor with visceral visual impact. Rubens paintings anchor the collections of the worlds most important museums and remain among the most coveted Old Master works on the international market, a status powerfully confirmed in July 1980 when Samson and Delilah achieved approximately 77 million USD at Christies London, one of the highest prices ever paid for an Old Master painting and enduring proof of Rubens unmatched historical, artistic, and market significance.
