This is a rare 1940s abstract oil painting by British avant garde artist, poet, and film maker, Humphrey Jennings.
Jennings is well-known for his contributions to British film making. He was described by film critic and director Lindsay Anderson in 1954 as "the only real poet that British cinema has yet produced."
Although his contributions to poetry, writing and film making is extraordinary, his true love was painting.
Jennings was born the son of an architect father and a mother who was a known painter.
His daughter, Charlotte Jennings stated that "From a very early age it was clear his strongest wish was to become a painter." In a letter to his wife, Cicely he wrote "I should hate doing films really simply I want to draw".
Jennings was friends with leading surrealists in his day, and many artist and collectors held his works, including Peggy Guggenheim and André Breton.
This work was purchased in 2006 from a sale at Christie's titled '20th Century British Art including The Studio of Humphrey Jennings'. In that sale this work is titled 'Plough No. 3'. In the notes it mentions that there was a studio stamp on the stretcher. Our gallery acquired to work loose, and had the work cleaned, repaired, re-stretched, and framed.
This painting is unsigned. It measures 19.5 x 23.5 inches sight size, and 23.5 x 27.5 x 1.5 inches including framing.
