A large-scale oil painting, vertically oriented. A figurative painting, of a humble beach cottage, or shack, as the artist calls it. The composition is made up of geometric shapes in saturated colors, angular lines, and cast shadows. A padlock on the front door suggests the summer season has ended, and this humble abode is boarded up for winter. Yet the mood of this composition is not somber; instead it's a high-contrast geometric puzzle of light and color.
6 feet tall x 5 feet wide.
Unframed, but with black painted edges, this piece can hang unframed, or be framed by the collector as they wish.
Doug Reina is a two time Pollock-Krasner grant recipient whose studio is in Setauket, New York.
Reina is a full-time artist who creates paintings both on location, as well as in his studio of the unique landscapes and people and structures that are part of his life.
Reina is also a cartoonist, whose work has appeared in the New Yorker magazine as well as with King Features Syndicate. He has recently published a book called
“Doug Reina, Under the Covers” which is available on Amazon and features cartoons and sketches pulled from the past 25 years of his sketchbooks.
For the past several years, he has held weekly painting lessons for adults in his studio.
In addition to painting, Reina enjoys collaborating with fellow artists. In 2021 he created a recurring zoom "Art-Hang" meeting with several regional artists to discuss art related topics. He also co-created and produced "Face to Face - Artists Painting Artists" an exhibition that was presented by the Long Island Museum in 2019. It featured approximately 60 works by more than 30 contemporary artists who sat for studio portraits of one another.
Reina's artwork has been exhibited in galleries, museums and public and private collections on Long Island, with some exposure in New York City, Connecticut and Florida as well. Galleries and museums that have exhibited his work include: • Reboli Center for Art

ARTIST STATEMENT
What I'm trying to do is to create a painting that operates on two levels.
On one level, the painting must have a subject that I find original and compelling, one that invokes a feeling in me that I am excited to share with the viewer.
On the other level, the painting must have a unique arrangement of forms, values and colors, in order for the work to have the appearance of an abstract painting.
One of the methods I use to achieve this is to begin the work on a blackened canvas. That gives me the ability to leave sections of black areas to be part of the composition. It's my opinion that these black sections of the painting are much more interesting than if I had painted in whatever was supposed to be there. The black creates a mysterious, dreamlike mood, which I welcome.
In addition, by painting color over the black canvas, the color is often influenced by the black color coming through the paint. This is particularly useful if I'm trying to portray something that is old and weathered. If I scrape through the paint with the back of my brush, I can create a line. One last thought about painting over black; color really pops off of a black surface.
