Old Harry Rocks IV offers a slightly more intimate interpretation of the Dorset coastline, focusing on the interplay between water and stone. Executed in oil on canvas, the painting places the viewer closer to the surface of the sea, where reflections and subtle movement become central to the composition. The realist approach is balanced with painterly softness, allowing atmosphere to guide the scene.
The palette leans toward cooler blues and silvery greys, with the chalk cliffs rendered in layered whites and muted earth tones. Gentle shifts in colour describe the changing depth of the water, while small figures and boats provide scale without disrupting the tranquillity of the scene. Light is diffused rather than direct, lending the painting a calm, even glow.
This work feels contemplative and quietly immersive, inviting prolonged viewing rather than immediate impact. Hargreaves’ sensitivity to place and tone transforms a familiar landmark into a moment of stillness, where nature appears unhurried and enduring.
Artist Biography:
Born in 1957, Ian studied at Bournemouth College of Art. At the age of 21 he set off across Europe for ten months, recording his travels in watercolour. This instilled a love of Mediterranean subjects, which was to influence his work many years later.
From the ages of 24 – 28 he lived in London and Sicily, earning his keep painting portraits. 1985 Ian moved to Germany, where he remained for the next 24 years. Here he exhibited with galleries in Hamburg, Munich and Salzburg. His work was also purchased for numerous Public Collections. Ian moved back to England in 2008. He now works from his studio in Poole, Dorset and exhibits regularly around the country. His work hangs in many private and corporate collections worldwide.

Ian Hargreaves
Nacido en 1957, Ian Hargreaves estudió en el Bournemouth College of Art. A los 21 años, recorrió Europa durante 10 meses, registrando sus viajes en acuarela.
