In Old Harry Rocks V, Ian Hargreaves explores the dramatic coastal formations of Dorset with clarity and restraint. Painted in oil on canvas, the composition frames the iconic chalk cliffs rising from calm, translucent waters, their monumental presence softened by light and atmosphere. The realist style is evident in the careful observation of form, while the overall mood remains serene rather than imposing.
The colour palette is dominated by cool blues and sea greens, contrasted with the chalky whites and soft greys of the cliffs. Subtle variations in tone suggest shifting light and depth beneath the water’s surface, while hints of warmth in the rock faces prevent the scene from feeling stark. The sky remains understated, allowing the coastline to command attention.
This painting captures the quiet majesty of the landscape without exaggeration, emphasising harmony between land, sea, and light. Hargreaves’ measured brushwork and tonal sensitivity give the work a timeless quality, making it both visually compelling and meditative.
Artist Biography:
Born in 1957, Ian studied at Bournemouth College of Art. At the age of 21 he set off across Europe for ten months, recording his travels in watercolour. This instilled a love of Mediterranean subjects, which was to influence his work many years later.
From the ages of 24 – 28 he lived in London and Sicily, earning his keep painting portraits. 1985 Ian moved to Germany, where he remained for the next 24 years. Here he exhibited with galleries in Hamburg, Munich and Salzburg. His work was also purchased for numerous Public Collections. Ian moved back to England in 2008. He now works from his studio in Poole, Dorset and exhibits regularly around the country. His work hangs in many private and corporate collections worldwide.

Ian Hargreaves
Nacido en 1957, Ian Hargreaves estudió en el Bournemouth College of Art. A los 21 años, recorrió Europa durante 10 meses, registrando sus viajes en acuarela.
