Le Papillon is a lyrical and imaginative figurative work by Yves Ganne (French, 1931–2019), executed in oil on canvas and signed ‘Y Ganne’ in the lower right, with a further signature and inscription of the title on the reverse. Measuring 50.5 x 65.3 cm, the painting comes directly from the estate of the artist. The composition depicts a young girl reaching to catch a butterfly, her flowing hair rhythmically echoing the undulating horizontal lines of the background. This visual correspondence creates a sense of movement and harmony, imbuing the scene with both playfulness and poetic restraint.
Born in Angers, Anjou, in 1931, Yves Ganne studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes before continuing his training in Paris under Fernand Léger, whose emphasis on structure and colour informed Ganne’s mature style. He gained early recognition at the Prix de la Jeune Peinture exhibition in 1950 and was awarded the Prix de la Ville de Menton in the same year. His first Paris exhibition was held in 1954 at Drouant David, followed by a second exhibition there in 1957. Ganne also exhibited in London at Tooth and Sons and participated in numerous group exhibitions in France and internationally.
Known for his vividly coloured landscapes, still lifes, and figurative works, Ganne’s paintings are held in important public collections including those of the French Government, the City of Paris, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris. Le Papillon exemplifies his ability to merge narrative charm with formal elegance, making it a particularly appealing example of his figurative output.

Yves Ganne
Yves Ganne nació en Angers, Anjou, Francia, en julio de 1931. Estudió en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Nantes y con Fernand Léger en París.
