19th Century Silver Plated Victorian Figural "Kate Greenway" Themed Napkin Ring

Acerca del artículo

The Kate Greenway style Victorian figural silver plated napkin rings are probably the most sought after and desirable rings of the 19th century, and this ring depicting a little girl sitting on a small sled next to a napkin ring is in that category. Kate Greenway was a mid 19th century British children's book author who created Dickens' like characters with innocent child type characteristics, and illustrated them in her publications; attaining world wide acclaim and adoration which was not lost on the figural napkin ring industry at the time. This ring is completely original in every aspect with no restoration, and the majority of the silver plate still intact. The floral and wreath repousse application to the central ring body is bordered by a double ring raised edge perimeter. The girl is cast in great detail with lifelike facial features and Victorian period clothing and bonnet. The underneath is marked (see image) ""Derby Silver Co.Derby, Ct," and "Quadruple Plate 316" with the anchor and crown logo in the center. All in all, this is simply a lovely and charming desirable ring to add to your collection or even better to adorn your dinner tableware presentation. The ring was manufactured by the Derby Silver plate company, commencing business in 1872 in Derby, Connecticut. It is memorialized as Plate 546 on page 222 and referenced as manufacturer's number "316" in Gottschalk and Sandra Whitson book "Figural Napkin Rings" published in 1996. In the Victorian era family tradition each family member had their own distinctive napkin ring since the napkin was to be re-used for subsequent meals (no washing machines in those days); while guests got to have their own designated ring also. Nowadays, silver plated Victorian figural napkin rings have become quite collectible, with some dinner hosts placing napkin rings in their place servings trying to match up and reflect characteristics and personality traits of their prospective guests with the subject matter and theme of the ring. Be vigilant of reproductions, since fakes are abundant. I guarantee the originality of this ring to be original and Victorian. With Victorian napkin rings, it's all about condition when determining quality and value.
