Acerca del artículo

Jupiter Mythological Scenes and Roman Reliefs, Antique Classical Engraving, 1721 This refined mythological engraving originates from the first English edition of Bernard de Montfaucon’s monumental work Antiquity Explained and Represented in Sculptures, published in London in 1721. The plate is devoted entirely to Jupiter (Iuppiter), the supreme god of Roman religion, and presents a carefully structured selection of mythological scenes, relief compositions, and symbolic imagery drawn from admired Roman antiquities. The composition combines several distinct representations of Jupiter: oval and circular reliefs showing the god in motion, Jupiter associated with the eagle, and a larger narrative scene depicting figures in a temple or sepulchral setting, traditionally linked to ancient Roman ritual or commemorative contexts. Unlike purely numismatic or fragmentary study plates, this sheet places clear emphasis on mythological storytelling and visual balance, making it immediately legible and decorative while remaining grounded in scholarly antiquarian sources. Montfaucon’s imagery is rooted in Italian antiquarian scholarship, particularly the Roman tradition shaped by Giovanni Pietro Bellori, whose writings and collections informed much of the visual material. Although printed in England, the artistic origin of the subjects lies firmly in ancient Rome and its Renaissance and Baroque rediscovery. Plates of this type appealed not only to scholars and artists but also to collectors interested in classical mythology and its visual language. Today, this plate stands out within the Montfaucon series for its narrative clarity and strong mythological focus, making it especially suitable for classically inspired interiors, libraries, studies, and hotel settings where a single powerful image is preferred over densely academic reference material. Condition report: Good overall condition. Light, even age toning and minor edge wear consistent with early 18th-century paper. Plate impression remains strong and clear. No significant tears, losses, or restorations observed. Framing tips: This plate benefits from a generous off-white or soft ivory mat to emphasize the mythological scenes and relief forms. A dark walnut, mahogany, or black frame enhances the classical character, while a slimmer, understated frame works well in contemporary interiors with neoclassical references. Technique: Engraving Maker: Bernard de Montfaucon, France (published London, 1721)
