In 1862, Ebel settled down as an independent artist in Düsseldorf, he chose to depict idyllic visions of timeless German landscapes, and highlight them with Romantic style.
The beech grove was among Ebel’s favorite subjects and always a way for him to express his talent for color.
This painting, dated 1868, may have been realized or at least inspired by the Harz forest and mountains near Halberstadt where Ebel sojourned that same year.
Nowadays, his paintings are visible in several German museums, such as the Kunsthalle in Bremen, Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Hohhaus-Museum in Lauterbach, Museum der Bildenden Künste in Leipzig, Museum of Wiesbaden and the Van der Heydt Museum.
