Presented is the scarce facsimile first edition printing of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol In Prose Being a Ghost Story of Yule Tide, published in 1914 by H. S. Nichols in New York. The book is a true replica of the original 1843 first edition, issued with the same fonts, illustrations, typos, and advertisements as the original. It was also the first facsimile first edition of A Christmas Carol to be printed.
Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was the most successful book of the 1843 holiday season. It was first published in London by Chapman
Hall, on December 18, 1843. Over six thousand copies sold in the seven days before Christmas of that year and eight stage adaptations were in production within two months of the book’s publication. The book is as popular today as it was over 150 years ago.
The novel tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation into a gentler, kindlier man after visitations by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Charles Dickens, through the voice of Scrooge, urges readers to honor Christmas in their hearts and try to keep the spirit of Christmas alive throughout the year.
This 1914 facsimile first edition is bound in red cloth, with decorative blind stamping on the front and back boards, with the title and surrounding wreath stamped in gilt on the front and along the spine. The book begins with an endorsement and introduction by the publisher H. S. Nichols, wherein he explains that this is a true facsimile of the original first edition of A Christmas Carol. Within the introduction, Nichols includes examples of the first edition title page, printed in three colorways, red, blue, and a page printed in both red and green. These were Dickens’ first color choices for his title page. There is also a printing of the famous “Fezziwigs Ball” illustration, in color. The following printers page, preface, contents page, text and illustrations, and publisher's advertisements at the end are all as originally printed in the 1843 first edition. This edition also maintains the original 1843 edition “Stave I” first chapter heading and the uncorrected text that was later revised in the second edition.
Because it is the first facsimile ever issued of the 1843 A Christmas Carol, this 1914 Nichols printing occupies a distinct niche within Dickensiana and Christmas-literature collecting. Its careful replication of the true first edition, combined with its early publication date and rarity, makes it far more desirable than later, more common facsimiles.
CONDITION:
Very good + condition. Octavo. In the publisher's original red cloth boards, blind stamped on front and back, gilt titles and decorative gilt wreath to the front board and spine. Light scuffing and bumping to the edges on the front and back boards, spine is slightly darkened with bumping along top and bottom, spine gilding is faded, back board has very minimal discoloration. Illustrated, in black and white and full color. Pages are clean and bright with no folds or tears. One page with a stain but no other visible discoloration. Bookplate of writer Vincent Starrett to front endpaper and ownership signature on the half title page.
Dimensions: 6 ¾”H x 4 7/16”W x 13/16”D.
