Acerca del artículo
This antique Persian Sarab tribal small rug, woven circa 1870–1890, originates from the historic weaving region of Sarab in northwest Persia. Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, it measures approximately 3 ft 8 in x 7 ft 1 in (about 112 × 216 cm). The rug falls into a standard small / short-runner size class, reflecting late-19th-century village production characterized by compact proportions, robust materials, and practical durability suited to everyday domestic use of the period.
The design is organized around a directional geometric medallion composition. An elongated hexagonal central medallion anchors the field, articulated with stepped outlines and niche-like geometry. Surrounding motifs include latch-hook forms, small crosses, abstract rosettes, and angular fillers arranged along a single vertical symmetry axis. A wide contrasting border with multiple guard bands frames the lighter field. The color relationship is clear and intentional: a sand-beige ground is set against darker slate and weathered teal blues, espresso brown outlines, and khaki accents, with visible abrash lending depth and age character.
Construction features symmetrical (Turkish) knots, estimated at 100–150 KPSI, producing crisp geometric clarity softened by age. The low cut pile (approximately 4 mm) enhances durability and pattern legibility, while the wool fibers provide natural resilience and moth resistance. The handle is flexible yet stable, making the rug appropriate for light functional use when paired with a thin felt or felt-rubber pad.
For designers, this piece functions as a collected accent rug in low-traffic hallways, bedrooms, studies, or formal sitting rooms. Its muted earth-and-blue palette integrates seamlessly with wood, leather, stone, and neutral interiors, while its authentic tribal character adds historical depth and value retention.
Condition is rated Wear Grade A. No repairs are noted. There is localized blue dye bleed around parts of the medallion and motifs, consistent with natural dyes and age. Selvedges remain intact; one end retains short, worn fringe while the other is more securely finished. Professional, low-moisture cleaning with dye testing is recommended to preserve this late-19th-century textile.
