Acerca del artículo
This antique Persian Hamadan runner dates from approximately 1870–1890 and represents a classic village-woven interpretation of the region’s densely patterned niche layouts. Measuring about 2 ft 10 in x 10 ft 0 in (≈ 2.63 m²), it belongs to the Runner size class and is constructed in hand-knotted wool on a cotton warp and weft with a symmetrical (Turkish) knot structure. Its medium-light weight class and moderate 4 mm pile height place it in a durable yet flexible category suited to refined circulation spaces in adult households.
The design is defined by a directional niche layout, with segmented field panels containing repeating palmettes, floral sprays, serrated leaves, small rosettes, and geometric vine tracery. A surrounding main border—slightly darker than the beige-dominant field—features smaller geometric rosettes and vinery that reinforce the rug’s formal symmetry. The palette centers on warm beige, golden brown, chestnut brown, and pale sand, with subtle abrash visible throughout, reflecting natural dyes typical of Hamadan work from this period.
Technically, the rug shows a 100–150 KPSI weave executed with two weft shots and moderate warp depression, producing a compact and reliable construction. The wool pile, trimmed to about 4 mm, delivers a soft but not overly plush hand and a modest sheen. This makes the runner appropriate for hallways, entryways, galleries, home offices, and dining-room circulation, provided traffic is moderate and shoes are monitored.
For designers, the warm neutral palette synchronizes easily with earth-tone, natural-material, and traditional formal interiors, while the directional niche structure introduces architectural rhythm into long corridors. Its antique age and rarity rating indicate strong long-term decorative value within curated spaces.
Condition is assessed as very good for its age, with no visible staining, color run, or structural repairs. Fringe is worn but intact, selvedges remain straight, and fibers show stable integrity. Routine low-moisture cleaning with dye-stability testing is recommended to preserve the rug’s antique character.
