About the Item
Late 18th century to early 19th century
Morocco
A rare example of an early Fez Hizam wedding belt. Woven on a hand loom, it features four Hispano-Moorish designs in gold and silver thread brocade. At the ends are an eight-pointed star, known as the “Seal of Solomon,” and a “Khamsa” hand, commonly known as the Hand of Fatima, intended to ward off the evil eye! It is lined with cotton and sky-blue woolen muslin from the late 18th century, like the oldest belts on record. Contrary to popular belief, the oldest belts are not half-belts, as they were much narrower than those from the early 20th century. Several threads pulled and scratches in the brocade, fringes missing at one end, and damage to the lining. Average condition. Dimensions: 13 cm wide by 260 cm long.
