Cowries sea shells have been popular in various cultures, including those in Japan, India, and West Africa. These mollusks were used as modes of communicating messages between villages, as decorations, or associated with religious rituals and deities.
Cowries’ durability and relative rarity made them a popular currency, too.
By the 1600s, demand was so high that instead of bringing them overland on camel caravans, traders had begun importing cowries by sea.
These shells are also a symbols of birth.
