From Nice in France
A festive headdress in printed cotton chintz from the vallée de la Roya in the hinterland of Nice, dating from the last quarter of the 19th century. Printed cotton percale with large stylised flower motifs, probably made in Alsace for the Provencal market. The bonnet is assembled by hand with small organ pleat gathers and a cream cotton lining for the front pass. Bordeaux taffeta piping and large crenellated silk ribbons to tie under the chin (ribbons are fragile). The yellow tightening ribbons at the back are later. The chintz is exceptionally fresh and has retained its glacé finish. Good condition.
