France Limousin
Spectacular regional cap known as the Barbichet du Limousin, a small treasure trove of French folk art. Barbichets are large wings of starched muslin, finely pleated at the sides so that they can be folded over the top of the head. This type of cotton muslin headdress was reserved for ceremonies and Sunday festivities in the Upper Limousin in the 19th century. The openwork embroidery on the bonnet, which is tightened by two ties at the back, is particularly skilful and is probably linked to the famous embroidery of Aixe sur Vienne (Haute Vienne) which began to develop in 1835. Shown here in between two bobbins. There is a small hole in the back of the bonnet, otherwise the headdress is clean, cleaned and starched. Beautiful folk art object. Good condition.
