About the Item

Hermès Monsieur et Madame II – CS140 – Orange Clair Vert Marron – NWSTS 1604191310 Brand: Hermès Type/Model: Shawl 140 Cashmere Silk Name Design: Monsieur et Madame II, Monsieur and Madame II Artist: Bali Barret Robert Dallet Size: 140 cm x 140 cm / 55 in x 55 in Color: Orange Clair (Light Orange), Vert (Green), Marron (Brown) Fabric: 65% Cashmere, 35% Silk, hand-rolled edges Approx. Issue Date: 2013 (first issued) Condition: New With Store Tag, Never Worn, Without Box (S Item) Country of Origin: Made in France Story about the Design: Monsieur et Madame II is a whimsical and iconic Hermès design inspired by an Art Deco-era Hermès advertisement from the 1920s. The scarf depicts the silhouetted figures of a gentleman and a lady, but look closely – each silhouette is filled with a collage of Hermès’s most beloved objects. For Madame, one can spot items like a Birkin handbag adorned with a Twilly, a Chaîne d’Ancre bracelet, and a Harnais watch, among others. Monsieur’s profile features treasures such as a Cape Cod watch, a travel holdall, an “H” logo belt, and even the toe of a riding boot with its spur – a nod to Hermès’s equestrian heritage. This clever “X-ray” of a couple showcases timeless house icons inside their profiles, a playful tribute “for lovers and collectors of Hermès objects everywhere.” Originally designed by Bali Barret in 2006 (Monsieur et Madame), the “II” edition (2013) revives that imaginative concept with a fresh twist. Barret, known for modernizing Hermès silks, revisited the composition for today’s world and enlisted famed wildlife artist Robert Dallet to add a bold new element – a graphic leopard-skin background. The lush leopard print (Dallet’s signature, given his renown for drawing big cats) gives the scene a contemporary edge and extra dose of glamour. The design is framed by a saddle-stitched border reminiscent of Hermès’s leatherwork, evoking the look of a classic clou de selle detail. Barret drew inspiration from vintage Hermès ads to capture the joyful spirit of the 1920s–1930s in this piece. The result is a scarf that is at once nostalgic and modern – Monsieur et Madame II feels resolutely chic and “of the moment,” yet all the accessories filling the silhouettes remain timeless Hermès icons. This design tells a story of romance and style, making it a wearable piece of Hermès history. Artist’s Story: Bali Barret is a French designer who had a profound impact on Hermès’s silk collections during her 17-year tenure with the house. Joining Hermès in 2003 to lead the Women’s Silk division (and later overseeing all women’s collections), Barret infused a modern, experimental spirit into Hermès scarves. She often played with format and motif – for example, creating designs that collage or repurpose classic motifs in new ways. Monsieur et Madame is a perfect example of Barret’s innovative approach: it “leverages pieces of other designs,” assembling Hermès objects into a silhouette tableau. Barret’s creative vision helped rejuvenate the carré tradition for new generations, and she personally designed several now-iconic scarves for Hermès (such as A Cheval sur mon Carré, Carré en Carrés, Jungle Love Rainbow, etc.). Monsieur et Madame II (2013) was one of her later scarf creations, blending nostalgia with a witty, contemporary twist. Robert Dallet (1923–2016) was a legendary French wildlife artist and a longtime collaborator with Hermès. Celebrated for his incredibly lifelike drawings of big cats and other animals, Dallet began working with Hermès at the behest of Jean-Louis Dumas in the mid-1980s. He went on to create many beloved scarf designs for the house – including classics like Jungle Love (featuring leopards), Les Tigreaux, Guepards, and more – all showcasing his meticulous, vivid portrayals of animals. Dallet’s work was so esteemed that Hermès posthumously honored him with a dedicated exhibit and book “Fierce and Fragile: Big Cats in the Art of Robert Dallet.” In Monsieur et Madame II, Dallet’s contribution is central: the leopard print backdrop that enlivens this shawl is credited entirely to him. This collaboration between Barret and Dallet perfectly combined Barret’s fashion-forward storytelling with Dallet’s mastery of animal artistry, resulting in a design that is both whimsical and graphically striking. Collector’s Notes: The Monsieur et Madame II shawl quickly became a collector favorite thanks to its clever concept and nods to Hermès heritage. Many fans find the design “really clever and young”, as one enthusiast described it, appreciating how it playfully incorporates classic Hermès symbols into a modern graphic silhouette. Upon its release in Fall/Winter 2013, the shawl generated considerable buzz on Hermès forums – in fact, collectors were eager to see how each colorway looked when worn. It was noted that official photos “did not do this shawl justice”, and in person the colors (especially in this vibrant Orange/Green/Brown cw) are far more beautiful and saturated. The contrast of the rich orange border and leopard spots with the bright vert (green) accents makes this shawl pop when tied, yet the neutral marron (brown) tones ensure it remains easy to coordinate. Because Monsieur et Madame II is filled with diverse motifs, it offers versatile styling: different tying methods will showcase either the leopard pattern or the silhouette couple and their “treasures.” This makes it a fun piece to experiment with – whether draped to display the dapper Monsieur and elegant Madame, or knotted to reveal just a hint of leopard and color, it always sparks conversation. On the PurseForum, scarf lovers shared modeling shots and confirmed that the shawl’s graphic impact is stunning in real life. The design also holds special appeal for avid Hermès collectors, since it essentially celebrates the house’s iconic products (Kelly/Birkin bags, watches, jewelry, etc.) within the design itself. Notably, Hermès released an extremely limited special edition of Monsieur et Madame II as a beaded silk chiffon shawl, hand-embroidered with sequins and gems – priced around $6,500. This ultra-rare version underscores the collectibility of the design. Overall, Monsieur et Madame II shawls are considered “RARE/Collector” pieces, especially in sought-after colorways. Their blend of classic Hermès charm and contemporary chic makes them highly desirable on the secondary market years after issue. Please ask us for High Definition Pictures Links. The composition reads like a Provençal quilt—concentric “patchwork” frames of tiny florals, indienne-style prints and botanical sprigs that resolve into a kaleidoscopic central rosette with birds. The riot of saturated tones in this sought-after orange / neon green / violet colorway underlines the design’s homage to the region’s sun-drenched fabrics and traditional piqué and boutis quilting...
