First half of the 18th century Germany or Europe Fichu or Palatine kerchief in brown silk gauze densely embroidered and scalloped with scrolls of exotic flowers. Skillful professional embroidery in guipure, crimped, embossed with gold lamé threads. A polychrome silk threads peinture à l’aiguille embroideries with couched stitch points and knot stitch points. Possible Ottoman work for Germany or Europe. Three to four needle holes, slightly oxidized gauze. On the other hand, flashy gold threads. Excellent condition of colour and conservation. Fichus were worn by elegant ladies throughout the eighteenth century, as they complemented fashionable dress with its decolletage. Silk gauze was a popular choice, as although light, it also provided some warmth, to keep the wearer’s throat and neck free of draughts. Surviving examples are rare, due to the fragility of the fine silk. This fichu, of brown silk gauze, has been embroidered with a floral meander incorporating roses and passion flowers. The colour scheme is restrained: the flowers show subdued tones of pink and mauve merging gradually into purple. The leaves show more vibrant colours, moving from bright lime-green on the edges of the leaves to a dark holly-green in the centres. Colour graduations are meticulously drawn by the choice of satin stitch and split stitch, permitting a subtle shift from light to dark. French knots, in similarly shaded silks, are chosen for the centres of the flowers. In addition, many of the leaves are entirely worked in a variety of gold threads. Several different variations of couching the gold thread have been used, some imitating woven textures. The overall richness of this voluptuous border is enhanced by the lavish use of metal threads, deployed to reflect the light in subtly different ways. Each decorative element is outlined in couched gold thread, giving it definition. The overall effect, especially seen by candlelight, must have been dazzling and glamorous.
