About the Item
These couture Roger Vivier Paris platform stilettos with a heel height of four and a half inches feature dark-chocolate brown fine Italian leather and leopard-print animal hair with three intersecting straps that widen at both ends. Made of bronze, the iconic Vivier rectangular buckle fastens the adjustable t-strap. Made in Italy and purchased through the flagship Parisian boutique, the pair date to the mid-2000s given that the satin insole with a hand-stitched-leather brand label with gilt text was the earliest footbed for custom-ordered pumps. Also, the design with a vertically-seamed toe is too complex for a ready-to-wear model.
In great vintage condition with slight damage at the bottom back of the right-shoe heel found on close examination, they appear to have been worn only indoors given the remaining dark tone of the leather soles.
Designing for Parisian couturiers since the 1930s from Elsa Schiaparelli to Christian Dior and world-renowned celebrities, the late French Roger Vivier was the most famous shoemaker in the world by the 1950s when he invented the stiletto. He continued custom making unique designs from thigh-high boots to square-toed buckle-decorated pumps—perhaps most memorably the YSL-pair worn by Catherine Deneuve when she starred in the 1967 film “Belle de Jour”.
After he died in 1998, to continue his legacy of design and extraordinary craftsmanship the first Roger Vivier Paris boutique opened when its Creative Director Bruno Frisoni introduced a ready-to-wear accessory line in Fall 2004. Four years later the Los Angeles Times reported, “Frisoni is pulling ahead (of Louboutin, Blahnik and Choo) with the most exclusive and exquisite shoes on the planet. These aren’t just little luxuries, they are objets d’art…” Until 2018, Frisoni presented seasonal collections for the relaunched French brand.
Based on his philosophy “a shoe never exists alone but is always part of a look”, Frisoni also became the personal shoe couturier to red-carpet notables like Cate Blanchett, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lawrence and Gwyneth Paltrow—with some celebrities spending $60k for a unique made-to-measure Roger Vivier Paris pair.
