Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, one of France's most outstanding artists, was a subtle painter and brilliant draftsman, the creator of superb portraits and a variety of historical and genre compositions. Nevertheless, his contemporaries, as well as his descendants, have never ceased debating the merits of his works, offering varying assessments of their characteristics. The master's innovation and the depth of his use of older artistic traditions, the balance between the principles of classicism and romanticism in his work, and, finally, the place of Ingres's legacy in the history of French art—each scholar offers their own answers to these questions, and their opinions are often contradictory. Not a single monograph devoted to Ingres has yet appeared in Soviet art history. This largely determines the purpose of this work: to examine the master's life and work, and to answer, to the best of the author's ability, each of the questions posed here.

The inclusion of Seurat and Signac in one book is motivated by the fact that the legacy of Georges Seurat, who died so young, is very limited. Paul Signac, who lived more than thirty years longer than Seurat, was not only his collaborator but also a follower of his research, a scholar of Neo-Impressionism.
