About the Item

This rare, late 1960s brown chenille Clobber coat fuses traditional British tailoring with the era’s rebellious, countercultural spirit. Its bold silhouette and attitude reflect how London led global fashion by transforming heritage garments into symbols of modernity, youth, and creative defiance. The coat features a long A-line cut with a tailored bust and waist. There is a collared neckline and caped shoulders which plays to the highwayman feel. The fabric is buttery soft brown chenille which up-close is detailed with burnt amber and pale gold hues. The front of the coat fastens with tonal brown plastic buttons. It is lined with vibrant russet satin throughout for a comfortable, luxurious wear. In excellent vintage condition, with no flaws or marks. The fabric has no stretch. It is labelled a size 3 which refers to an in-house sizing system, but we believe it would best fit up to a size UK 10, US 6 and sizes smaller. Notes on Designer: Clobber was founded in Blackheath Village, London, in 1964 by designer Jeff Banks, an influential designer and a pivotal member of the swinging 1960s London fashion scene. The boutique carried both his own designs and the work of other designers and attracted celebrities such as Terence Stamp and Jean Shrimpton, Twiggy and some of the Beatles. It proved such a success that in 1969, he launched his own fashion label, opening the first standalone Jeff Banks shop, as well as retail outlets in twenty-two department stores including Harrods and Harvey Nichols.
