About the Item

Circa 1845 Paris Very long French Paisley cashmere shawl probably made in Paris in the late French Louis-Philippe period. Woolen shawl woven on a quarter loom with a cut-throw. Large rectangular green reserve with central star and spandrels of boteh decorated with illumination. Very fine weave in eight colours, characteristic of the so-called rich shawls. Skilful designs of long paisley palms and superimposed neo-Gothic interlacing give a very complex visual effect with strong polychromy. The lines of the design are treated in an angular manner, à la Bâton Rompu, to accentuate the twill effect of the weave. Harlequin fringed borders on both ends. No moth holes or soiling. Excellent condition in terms of colour and conservation. Size: 343 cm x 158 cm.

19th Century Hand-Woven Kashmiri Paisley "Piano" Shawl
Located in Barrington, IL
A refined 19th-century hand-woven Paisley shawl from Northwest India, showcasing a sophisticated color palette of brick red, ivory, and black. Crafted in the Kashmir region, this historic textile represents the pinnacle of Indian weaving traditions and is often referred to as a "Piano Shawl" for its wide rectangular shape and decorative appeal when draped over furniture. The shawl features classic boteh (paisley) motifs that became emblematic of Kashmiri craftsmanship. These designs gained international popularity during the 1800s, particularly after Queen Victoria introduced them into royal fashion. This style inspired a wave of European imitations, notably in Paisley, Scotland—yet original Indian examples like this remain the most coveted by collectors. Versatile in use, this antique textile can serve as a luxurious wall hanging, a dramatic table or piano covering, or an elegant bed display. It’s a timeless heirloom piece, ideal for traditional, eclectic, or globally inspired interiors.
