About the Item
Circa 1860
France
Rectangular shawl to be worn as a stole, in remarkably transparent Grenadine silk, probably made in Lyon or Saint-Etienne during the French Second Empire. Rigid black silk (similar to organza) woven with double twists (which defines grenadine silk). Embroidered borders with fleurons in strong polychrome and matching frieze overlay. Fringes knotted in coloured silk on all four sides. No holes or stains, only two or three needle holes and a miscellaneous area where the silk is scuffed over a few millimetres (see last photos). The only defect to be noted. Wearable today. Very good overall condition in terms of colour and conservation.
Dimensions: 155 cm x 106 cm, fringes 10 cm.

Despite being over a century old, this intricate mantilla is as colorful and perfect as the day it was made. Similar in complexity to a piano shawl but half the traditional size (and twice as delicate) it is one of the most exquisite we have ever seen. Entirely handmade, its subtle color, delicate workmanship recalls designs by Maison Lesage.
